I would think the lack of direct flights to major west coast markets inhibits us a bit.

At least we have nonstop flights to LAX…for now.  Hope that we see expanded service to west coast destinations soon. I heard that Breeze Airways may be the one to do it!

Not sure if anyone saw the story on the airport and the stuff that Troy bell mentioned that ric is getting ready to do. The story came out on September 8th. Mentioned renovating the customs area that could lead to new flights to places in Canada and the carribean and also talked the expansion of the concourse b apron. I also heard the air national guard left giving ric hundreds more acres to work with for down the road. I’ll see if I can find the story again. Had a lot of positive and good things with it. Just need people to start using it more instead of going to Dulles or Reagan or even Norfolk international. Those are the kind of things that really hurt us in the long run.

Hey downtowner - I missed it completely. If you can find it and link us up, it would be awesome! I'd love to read about this. Was this in the Times-Dispatch?

Agreed - we need folks to fly RIC and not DCA or ORF - we need to schlep as many people through RIC's gates as humanly possible going forward, (given the levels of service we have, that is).

Wow it seems like Richmond is entering or still in another building boom...I wish my city could say the same.....

Plan!....Set it up!.....Start building!......Suddenly cancel it..... -Norfolk's quote the for last 10 years of construction.

From what I have been watching over there, I think Norfolk is starting to get there.  You may be a few years behind in comparison but it will happen.

At least you guys have the population that Richmond could only dream of. I mean 200k more and y’all are in the 2 million people population as a metro. I can’t wait to see the day when Richmond hits 2 million people. But me being 32 at the moment I don’t think I will live old enough to see that. If I do it will be amazing. But I’m not so optimistic I will get to see Richmond with that kind of growth.

One good commuter rail line from Richmond to Northern Virginia/DC would take care of everything, but unfortunately it isnt there. If Richmond could do an every hour, less than two hour rail trip to Alexandria downtown would fill up right quick.

Richmond will have hourly train service to Washington DC by 2030. Getting the travel time down to 2 hours will be breeze if we can build dedicated track for passenger trains, which just so happens to be in the long term plan for the rail line.

I'm turning 59 next month. I pretty much am resigned to the fact that I'll never live to see it.  When I was a lot younger, I was honestly hoping to see us crack 2 million metro well before now - like at least a decade or more before now.

Your not entirely wrong but do notice that our population is slowing down. Though our metro area as The City of Norfolk we are friking huge! One of the biggest on the East Coast! But for now Richmond's building boom is something we dream of over here in Norfolk...

Yea your right kinda....All we need is the casino and I believe that will attract hopefully at least one fortune 500 company into the area and build a tower Downtown. Once we get that we get a building boom because if its good enough for a fortune 500 company then a bunch of other companies jump in.   EDIT:  This is mostly what I REALLY Hope. For now its nothing but a fever dream.

Did any of you see this?  The city building inspector has shut down one of downtown's older 10-story apartment buildings as being unsafe. This is not good, to be sure. I hope this gets fixed quickly. I'm curious to know how many people live in this building.

I'm hoping a nice redevelopment comes out of all of this!  It's sad that it came to this though - unacceptable!  Hopefully, the residents find a new, better place to live.

Hoping the NIMBYs actually are useful for once and save this building from becoming a parking lot. Would be a shame to lose such a beautiful Greek revival gem.

Too bad the Jefferson won't do something a little more attractive with its parking needs.

No kidding.  You would think the surface lot would actually detract from the Jefferson's elegance.  I understand this move in the 90's when things were looking rough but now such a thought is unconscionable.

I'm not a preservationist by ANY stretch of the imagination - but this is one time I hope the NIMBYs come out in force and save this amazing building. There really isn't another building anywhere in RVA metro even remotely like it - and it's been a Franklin Street classic for generations. One of the most beautiful buildings in the city - and surely something could be worked out with the Jefferson to perhaps sell the building to a developer who could restore it as useable downtown space.

I don't know if that kind of growth would be that great to see in this day and age. If Richmond rapidly grew to that size, it would probably be because of rapid suburban expansion rather than urban growth. The size of the city and metro is just right, and would be best to focus on building up rather than out. Maybe even ripping out some of the freeways that the city has that it doesn't need.
