The West End

The open store front between Compadres and Port City Java in The Field House is going to be filled with a Boutique. I saw asign on the window there.

There hasn't been much going on at all at the Downunder/10 restaurant. Wonder if this is going to happen. They should have started work on it by now.

When I went to Niagara falls this past summer they had a Shoeless Joes restaurant that was pretty upscale. We decided to eat there and they have a lcd tv at each table showing some kind of sport. I thought it was pretty cool. I wonder if they know how good one of those one do in Greenville since Shoeless Joe was from here anyway. I could definetly see something like that in the westend. The food there was great.

I thought a Bakery for Dogs was originally going to be in that space where Munchies is. They must have realized there isn't too much demand for gourmet dog treats? or is the bakery for dogs going somewhere else?

Not sure. There is still one small empty spot in this strip on the other side of Pomegranate, I believe. Going there maybe? :dontknow:

What used to be where Munchies is now? Was it in poor condition?

It used to be a fitness gym, I wouldn't say it was in poor condition but it wasn't going to win any awards, Just looked like a big room with rubber mats and fitness equipment. It was painted white on the outside. nothing that really stood out. The Munchies storefront and colors look much better.

:silly: Is that a step backwards, or just a sign of the world we live in?

From fitness to junkfood... :D

Maybe ina few years the fitness center will be needed again...

Thanks, lbs5015. I remember that gym now. It seemed like an "Average Joes" kind of place to me!

I don't know how well Munchies will do. It doesn't really appeal to me, but I am sure a lot of kids will beg their parents to take them there after visiting Falls Park. :)

Good question. I've not heard anything more about it, but assume it's still in the works?

The Boat House is still in the works from what I understand. I work for Falls Park and there has been some discussion of the new restaurant. We currently "store" the trash from the Overlook Grill in a space near our shop, and the city removes it along with the trash collected from the park. During the summer our "trash room" fills up rather quickly with trash just from the Overlook, so we are all waiting to see what it will be like when the Boat House opens. I haven't heard any firm dates for an opening, and nothing has changed inside the space it would occupy inside Falls Place.

Welcome to the forum, Travo! :D

How frequently does the city remove the trash? Is it daily? :dontknow: If it's less frequent, then perhaps they should consider picking it up more regularly. I'm sure that the Boathouse would generate a 3-4 times the waste that the Overlook Grill generates, given the size of the restaurant that the plans revealed.

I'm reposting this from the journal thread.

My initial rsponse to a restaurant named Munchies specializing in "carnival food" was a combination of literally lol'ing with a simutaneous "EWWWWW".

Having grown up in the restaurant biz. and creating varous concepts, "carnival food" ranks slightly above a restaurant that features airline food and a step below one that would offer prison fare. What an awful concept.

I'm very pro business and love creativity but some things just shouldn't be done. I mean c'mon talk about perpetuating the fact that we're the 4th fatest state in the nation.

^ Don't think the owner meant it to be a restaurant. Think of it as a large snowcone / lemonade stand. With the tourist at Falls Park, and no place to get an ice cream cone, snowcone, slushie, etc, Munchies will be the store with all the snacks rolled into one place. It's no different than the food stands inside Carowinds. It's a food stand opposite Falls Park.

If my nephew is in town and we are playing in the park, we will duck in for some cotton candy on a fun Sunday afternoon.

If my partner and I are out for dinner or lunch, this place isn't even a consideration.

Excellent concept, considering the location at Falls Park, IMHO.

I don't know. Krispy Kreme does pretty well and look at Hardee's and what's the deal with the practically pornographic Jack in the Box commericial that is playing now?! I doubt I lot of people will be going to this place every day for lunch but this is near the ball park where semilar fare is served. I know I have had cravings from time to time for food I could normally get like an Elephant Ear, Cotton Candy or hot buttered (and I mean "real buttered) popcorn. Heck, I'd love for someone to take the bull by the horns and sell Egg Nog more times a year that Christmas. Also why are boiled peanuts for the most part only sold in roadside stands manned by retired gentlemen who have driven their wives crazy by puttering around the house. (That's the scenerio my wife and I speculate anyway when we see a certain boiled peanut trailer near our house)

I support the idea only because of the location. This would never work in the lobby of the Hyatt, but across from Falls Park I think it could do well enough. If the concept stinks, it closes. If not, they'll remain. That will be the real indicator.

I personally don't see a huge demand for stuff like they will offer, but then again that is not based on anything scientific. :silly: With that said, I can envision parents taking their kids there on a summer day after walking around at Falls Park. It's a harmless store that certainly isn't bad there. On the flip side, it's not an earth-shattering addition to the West End either. Given cost of renovations and improvements plus the rent they are paying there I will be surprised if they do enough business to make it profitable. I certainly hope it does well, though.

Thanks RestedTraveler, long-time lurker finally turned poster.

Every morning the Falls Park crew cleans and stocks the restrooms behind the Overlook Grill, and the restrooms under the Lazy Goat in RiverPlace. We also do a "riversweep" which involves removing trash from the park grounds, river, and trash cans. The trash we collect is added to the pile that The Overlook created during the evening. A trash crews comes to collect once a day during the week, and one of us does this on Saturday and Sunday. The Boathouse will produce 3-4 times more trash than The Overlook, and that is the problem we are facing. Where will we "store" it until it is collected? There are several options floating around, but the fact is our current location will not be big enough to handle more garbage. I guess we'll see, but I for one don't want a ton of sea food scraps stinking up the park!
