The West End

This is just a thought (perhaps I should let it go, as Ron White suggests?) ...

Could it be possible that Greenville balked at American Apparel's advertising, which sometimes borders on softcore porn? I don't have a problem with it at all, but no doubt, some might. That's why I raised my eyebrows when it was mentioned American Apparel would be opening up here. I was like, "really? They're letting American Apparel come here?"

However, there's an Abercrombie & Fitch in the Haywood Mall. It would seem to be to be a double standard if that were the case.

The thing is, every A&F ad I've seen -- with the exception of the now-defunct catalog -- has been.. somewhat tasteful. Some of the American Apparel ads .. well, they're not.

http://www.tienmao.com/archives/001742.html -- a small sampling of what American Apparel shows online and in-store. It doesn't look like something that would mesh well with the West End, imho.. and that's possibly why they're not planning on a Greenville store now.

While you compare a store downtown and a possible store in the West End, I have to say you're comparing apples and oranges. Downtown has more class and something that's acceptable at Haywood is one thing, but you better believe downtown requires a step above the other areas of town.

Like I said, guys.. it's just a thought I had.

And I wasn't trying to imply that Greenville's too conservative to allow American Apparel; I'm just thinking.. Greenville's downtown seems to be a blend of family-friendly and high-end, and while American Apparel isn't exactly a porn shop or anything, their advertising and displays can end up on the porny side.

It's entirely possible that there's another reason they're not opening a store in Greenville.. I was just offering up my own little idea.

I was in the West End tonight. It was the first time in a long time. But I could hardly contain my excitement. I mean looking around and seeing SO many things going on. Not just events, like Artisphere and the baseball game, but the construction and the changes that have taken place... I love it!

Would this have been developed as part of the proposed development of that now infamous "Wade Hampton Election Strategy Site" building? Is that still in the works, in spite of the DPC objecting, I wonder?

What's going to go in at the old Shealy Electric site?

I am pretty sure they are seperate projects, but not positive, I am told that the Shealy site will be an office building.

Tonight's Journal confirms this, I believe.

As mentioned in my post in the "the Point" thread, look for Doc Chey's to open a second Greenville location in the West End somewhere between Falls Park and West End Field before long. Maybe it will be part of one of these mixed-use developments on River Street?

That is pretty interesting, especially since their restaurant at The Point has only been open a short time. I find it amazing that the West End is so hot and trendy all of a sudden. Although development has occurred gradually over the past 5 years or so, it seems to really be heating up! Amazingly, with Falls Park and West End Field as catalysts, it is not a stretch to say that the West End is more in demand than downtown.

Did anyone here think we would be saying that anytime before 2010, if at all? Not I. Regardless, it is awesome for our city to have two distinct urban neighborhoods that are successful and thriving. And even though the West End is all the rage now, downtown is still doing great itself!

You're so right, Greenville!

Just think of what we CAN say in 2010 if we're saying this now...!!!

I think the new hotel development at City Hall proves that downtown is still hot and keeping pace. Hopefully Piazza Bergamo and the Pinnacle will further push North Main to new heights!

Greenville News has an updated article with regard to American Apparel:

http://www.greenvillenews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...SINESS/60508006

One quote in the article jumped out at me: "Greenville is a second or third tier city, so it's not currently a priority."

Sounds like sour grapes to me. I realize that we are not NYC, but the way I read that comment it sounds like they could care less about insignificant Greenville. Maybe there is more to this story than American Apparel simply changing their minds, especially since that statement is not consistent with locations where they already have stores.

In SC, Charleston already has a store, which is at best only slightly more desirable than Greenville due to the heavy tourism. An American Apparel store is planned in Columbia, and they are certainly not above our market. There is already a store in Savannah, which is probably a fourth-tier city. I look forward to hearing more about this in the future.
