Healthcare Projects in NWA

Mcheiss, I very much doubt it - probably level II. To be level I you have to have a neurosurgeon in-house at all times which is hard for all but academic centers like UAMS to pull off. However, level II is very good for a community that size - a few years ago I know there was only one level II (Baptist) in the state. The difference between I and II is really a formality as all trauma in NWA would go to the closest major trauma center. NWA certainly needs more trauma surgeons, though. I have no doubt of that.

Is UAMS or Baptist LR ACS certified?

Gang,

Driving I-540 south between Walton/Walnut and the new Mercy Hospital, I saw a sign on the west side of the highway (north of the Simmons(?) place office building, in that cleared off spot on the hill) that said the Northwest Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute is building a new complex on the spot.

I'm changing my mind...my son's urologist is in a medical complex west of Simmons. Between Mercy and NWA hospitals in Bentonville, we may indeed see a medical corridor taking shape that could become a "fifth anchor".

Yes.

I looked it up to see and they are not. AR and MS had no trauma centers on that list. Missouri only had one (Barnes-Jewish in St Louis). Some states like CA had very many. From what I'd heard some places take this sort of accreditation seriously and many do not. It's not like being JCAHO-accredited for a hospital, which is a MUST. It's kind of an optional designation.

Well UAMS officials were in Fayetteville today discussing the need for a Satelittle Campus. The officials basically said that the satelitte campus was coming to Fayetteville, because it's the ideal location in the state, not to mention the second largest metro in Arkansas.

This is certainly good news to hear.

Is this official then that it's coming to Fayetteville and not Ft Smith?

It's not official, but it's almost a given for Fayetteville, since they spoke in Fayetteville and talked about the NWA Metro, not the Ft. Smith area.

Cool, guess it would take a major upset for it to be going to Ft Smith at this point. Although I do feel for Ft Smith though. This could have helped them out quite a bit. But hey I still have to hope and pull that these type of things will come to NWA instead.

That's true. We have to wait on an official response before anything is guranteed.

And then we'll have to figure out how to pay for it. Upfront costs are going to be very high and annual costs will also be a drain on the state budget. I would bet they are currently courting donors and that's part of this visit. Incorporating a preexisting hospital like Washington Regional would help the budget considerably but I don't know if they're really considering that.

A bit of good news. A Little Rock family has donated $1 Million towards a Northwest Arkansas Pediatric facility. This would be a branch of Little Rock Childrens Hospital. I don't think that this will be a full scale Children's Hospital, but it will offer a lot of essential healthcare for children.

The paper mentioned that this would serve 9 counties in Arkansas, as well as eastern Oklahoma, a small portion of Kansas, and Missouri.

This follows on the heels of UAMS's plans to build a 10,000 sq. foot pediatric clinic in Lowelll, which as well would be a satellite campus for UAMS.

It's interesting, I'm not sure how it would work. Since the UAMS Dept of Pediatrics is at Arkansas Children's Hospital, we're talking about the same doctors. This is probably for the same facility and to help expand it. The real need is for pediatric specialists - cardiologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, etc that the region isn't quite large enough to support yet but whose residents need access to this care.

The Flakes also gave $1 million to Karen Flake's alma mater, Mt St Mary's, which is an all-girls Catholic high school in Little Rock's Hillcrest neighborhood.

Well the Gazette mentioned that they would be seperate facilities.
