that, is a big hotel.

O yeah...I'd like to see it do well and then have a Steve Wynn or MGM-Mirage property built in Tunica to compete with it...it'd be pretty swanky. It's feasible to imagine Tunica overtaking Atlantic City and becoming the second largest gambling destination in the country. It could become an eastern Vegas with upscale spots...definitely a plus for the Memphis MSA!

Yowza!

When I first heard about this, I was really skeptical--sounded like some developer just blowing smoke. But it now looks like this thing may actually become a reality.

Let's see:

1. an 80,000-square-foot casino

2. a 1,200-room 4-star hotel

3. a 375,000-square-foot convention center

4. retail space

5. a 5-acre water park

6. a 2,500-seat auditorium

7. a snow park, for year-round skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating

8. a 7,205-yard, 18-hole covered golf course

And these are the guys who did the covered golf course in Edmonton, so it looks real to me. :D

I'm going to post this over on the Louisiana/Mississippi board.

Well, it's beginning to look real. I am very curious about the hotel and the other investors. This could actually be Mississippi's first Mobil 4 star hotel since 1977. I hope it will be manged by a company like Four Seasons. Fairmont might be more likely because of the Canadian connection. Mandarin Oriental? Wouldn't that be something?

Yep read my mind. IMO the only reason Atlantic City is so popular is because of its location so close to the Bos-Wash megalopolis. When the Myriad opens, it will probably usher in a whole new era of family friendly developments in Tunica County.

Perhaps there might be a major exapansion of the airport in Tunica. If Southwest Airlines were to fly there it could be significant.

There is supposed to be scheduled commercial airline service commencing this spring, but Southwest and Jet Blue are definitely not flying in. In a previous thread, it was assumed that it would be a routine charter service (Champion Air most likely) that would fly Tunica-Atlanta routes. Perhaps we could see another actual airline flying in with all the development coming into the area.

Wow. This is a very impressive project. I remember hearing about a similar covered casino project a year or two ago, I can't remember if it is the same one as this though. This one is very ambitious though, and sounds like it will be amazing if completed as detailed in that article. It would do wonders to an already growing area like Tunica.

$1.6 BILLION :w00t:

I had a nice trip to Memphis and Tunica last month.

I remember reading about the "Myriad" project a couple years ago. Then, it was a $500-million project.

Then, last I had seen, which was last year, it was up to $900-950 million.

Now, $1.6 freakin' billion dollars.

If they really do build this thing out fully as planned, it will be better than everything that's in Tunica now combined, and probably by twice over.

Yep this development is much much bigger than Opryland. Its a project you would expect in the UAE or Vegas, not a small Mississippi cotton town with a population of only 10k that was one of the poorest counties in the nation. Along with all the developments the Myriad will cause, don't forget the Metro Megasite which will probably bring an auto or pharmacutical plant and thousands of new jobs.

It seems that with the $1.6 billion being invested in Myriad along with the other 9 Tunica casinos, MATA would shift the focus of future light rail from Downtown to the airport and focus on a route from Downtown to the Myriad, with stops along the way in DeSoto County and the other casinos (maybe through the airport?).

I wonder if they've ever approached the State of Mississippi or the casinos with such an idea? Surely, the state of MS, the city of Memphis and the casinos could fund such a project if they worked together.

Anyone have contacts at MATA??? Or maybe TDOT or MDOT???

I really think what MATA ought to do first is build a leg from downtown to Collierville rather than to the airport. But if Mississippi wants to shell out the dollars to build something from Tunica to the stateline, I say go for it. I think though, that transportation priorities in that area have been spoken for by the decision to build I-69 and the I-69 loop (I-269?).

Wow! That panorama is really over the top. :silly:

It makes me want to go down there just to gawk at it.

I imagine it's a smart move by Myriad, to capitalize this early on I-69 and the increased traffic that will go through there.

With the Bass thing at the Pyramid and this development, this is nothing but great news for Memphis tourism.

I especially liked this quote from Myriad's site:

"This four-star, 1,200 - room hotel will be designed and run by one of the nation

My bet is the folks in Mississippi, maybe even Tennessee, would think you're asking an awful lot of them to expect them to have a regional perspective and cooperate with the riffraff from the other side of the line. Have you read the comments from the politicians in Mississippi regarding Memphis in the past month? Not very neighborly.

But, I agree, both sides should tackle all major projects with a REGIONAL perspective.

I'm pondering again this quote from Myriad's site:

What the heck is a "prolific" hotel? Does it breed quickly?

Ah, you must be referring to MS's new shoot-the-burglar bill where the DeSoto contingent was talking about all the crime leaking across from Memphis.

DeSoto won't go for a public transit link for 50 years, until after it's become a blighted inner-ring suburb and they try to reinvigorate it. Besides, MDOT is footing the bill for bringing I-69 and I-269 to TN's doorstep.

There was also reference in the CA to comments by a Desoto legislator regarding a smoking bill. Implied they don't want Memphians going to Desoto county to get smokes. I think the bill would've reduced the state tax on them? I don't know, it's pretty petty.

That legislator seems pretty dense. By his logic, why not raise the sales tax on all items to 20%? That would keep Memphians at home. Oh, but wait, duh, Mississippians would have to pay it too!

Shoot, when I was a kid, the 7-11 on State Line Rd. had no problems with Memphis highschoolers buying beer down there. lol

That was in the days when it was 18 in Mississippi and 21 in Tennessee.

Then again, back in those days, that 7-11 was probably the only store in DeSoto.

I double-checked my brain and my dictionary for "prolific" and I don't quite understand that one either.

I was shocked that Desoto called Memphians riff raff too. They just don't seem to understand where all of there growth has come from (Memphis). Thats just even more of a reason for me to keep my riff raff dollars on the Tennessee side of the state line. (the terrible traffic being the other reason)

Definitely an odd choice of words. I do think that there will be a culture clash of sorts between the NIMBY suburban settlers in DeSoto County and the casinos. Then again, suburban cul-de-sacs and freewheeling casino towers may not be such strange bedfellows as might first appear. Just look at Las Vegas.

Maybe it's a reference to the generation of money being "prolific" (i.e. producing "results" or "fruit"/money in abundance). Certainly an awkward construction.
