Rebirth of Downtown Chattanooga (2006 and on)

Recommended Posts

The industrial South Side continues its transformation to a real neighborhood.  Former auto glass shop to become a tavern amid the increasing number of businesses and apartments along the axes of Main and Market.

Vintage turn-of-last-century hotel (Ross Hotel) will be rehabbed and made into moderate-rent ("workforce") apartments.  This is across in an area of Downtown with a lot of potential... on the outside of the block of Patton Parkway.

And this is a continuation of development of very nice homes on Walnut Street downtown, on what used to be three blocks of Unum surface parking.  A few years back the company consolidated its parking to a large new garage and two surface lots (unfortunately one was the site of the former masonry 8-story EPB building) along Market Street.  While Unum has no plans to build on the old EPB lot, they have not publicly ruled out someday building a new HQ building there.  You may remember that EPB built their sparkly new HQ building on a block bounded by Market/Broad/MLK a few years back.

Anyway, here is the article and some photos of the area that is transitioning quite well to downtown residential along Walnut Street.    http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2014/mar/23/under-construction/

Construction of the new Holiday Inn at the corner of Chestnut and 5th is well underway.  Here's the announcement from the TFP a few months back.  The nearby construction of the HQ for Vision Hospitality and a re-do of Jack's Alley are also connecting quite nicely.

And the Chattanooga Whiskey Company, in its plan to move to its namesake city, will not be moving into the Ross Building at 4th and Broad Street, due to structural issues in the old building.  Instead, the company will move into a much smaller building across Market Street from the Choo Choo.

The aforementioned apartment project at Main and Market.  This is underway, but TFP article is from April... http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2014/apr/30/construction-underway-on-main-market-development/

It is not true that this recognition is related in any way to my being a resident... because actually I don't live inside the city limits. But I do have "the gig".

Chattanooga gets $400,000 federal grant for light rail study

A positive step in the right direction.

Beat me to it... good job!

This thing could very well have "legs" (bad pun intended).  Here's a piece from the NBJ:  http://www.bizjournals.com/nashville/morning_call/2014/09/feds-award-choo-choo-city-400k-to-study-light-rail.html

Additional housing on the way.  This project is the first phase of market student housing on a block across MLK from the UTC campus.  If anyone is familiar with Champy's, this is right behind it, in a fairly untapped "corner" of downtown.

And I had forgotten about this from earlier this year... about the new $59M dorm at UTC.  This will be rising near McKenzie Arena (aka Round House) on Douglas, near 5th.  From the TFP (a brief blurb) on the old 1951 Interstate Life (Tennessee State) office building that has been tagged as "surplus" and in danger of demolition.

That's going to be a nice looking project for the MLK corridor near campus.

That corridor has tons of potential.

LOL! I agree! Seriously though, Chattanooga is absolutely gorgeous. I've been visiting the city since I was a little boy when my grandmother lived there, so naturally, I have very fond memories of the place. It's got to be one of the most underrated cities in the nation. It really is a true gem and a perfect balance between urban and nature. It kind of reminds me of a smaller, more diverse, slightly less developed Portland, Oregon.

I agree!! Chattanooga is the next Portland, Oregon. I'm out here on the left coast and I'll tell you first hand, the Mid-West Kids are realizing that working at Stumptown Coffee house and having enough money to go to concerts and down Microbrews and chomp on Food Trucks isn't gonna cut when their 35th birthday is around the corner. That being said, they're leaving Portland, Oregon and coming to Nashville, Chattanooga, Charlotte, Huntsville and Tampa. I'm from Macon, Georgia, and I'm proud to say Macon; like Chattanooga is where Portland was back in 1993. The Darlings are rising. The Creative Class want's affordability and Interstate 5, with the exception of Bellingham and Portland to a slight degree, is becoming unaffordable.

For some reason, this computer's browser will not let me cut/paste articles and photos.  But to place-mark a few items in Chattanooga...

1.  New building for T.C. Thompson Children's hospital

2.  Puckett's Grocery will be opening at the old TGI Friday's location at the Aquarium.

3.  New apartments proposed for a site near Lincoln Park near Riverside Drive (where the Central Avenue extension to Riverside is proposed).  There is some opposition to the extension of Central

Avenue.

4.  Undisclosed redevelopment of a site on the river in Lupton City, that was the land Blue Cross Blue Shield had planned to build its new HQ before settling on Cameron Hill.

Does anybody know who owns the lot in North Chattanooga at the corner of manufacturers and Cherokee?? I know about a year ago they were doing some core drilling, then made everybody vacate the property where you could no longer park there, but nothing has happened since? Anybody know what is going on there??
