Rebirth of Downtown Chattanooga (2006 and on)

Recommended Posts

A Chattanooga attorney is trying to stop a new apartment building from going up on the North Shore, claiming the city has improperly agreed to allow the developer to use 75 parking spaces for its tenants.

Heard some rumors around town and even out of regarding the UT medical system opening a full school in Chattanooga, rather than just a supplementary campus. Can anyone speak to these?

Under-the-radar development news which could spur many cool new ventures down the line in regards to harder-science industries in the city: ORNL may open office in Chattanooga:

Was at the City Council meeting last night and the building that has been controversial, proposed for Cowart Street at 7 stories was up for third and final reading.  The people who opposed it were mostly adjacent property owners whose buildings contain retail (and maybe some apartments).  A Mr. Johnson spoke out against it because it simply was "too tall".  Apparently existing codes allow up to 5 stories.  Another man was an executive at the adjacent property (a division of TVA) who wanted access to the back of his building.  The third and final person was a well-known architect and preservation "activist" Stroud Watson, who spoke to the "living room" of the built environment. Basically, the proposal was amended to require retail at both corners of Cowart and six feet (easement) at the back of the building for the TVA building, which apparently came up to the property line.  Proposal still includes lifting the 5-story limit and allow the 7-floor plan.  The new two amendments mean that the proposal will have to go back to first reading for the approval process.

Have several doctor friends and grads of UTC, a couple of whom did residency in Chattanooga. So they are fairly close to the UT medical community.  I will try and remember to ask them about this rumor.  Thanks for the heads-up.

It looks like construction has begun on 27 through downtown.

Any news on the Gold building? I thought the Westin conversion was going to begin this fall?

Erlanger officials Wednesday unveiled preliminary designs for the upcoming Children’s Hospital outpatient center and launched their Believe public philanthropic campaign to raise $23.5 million for the first phase of the project.

Erlanger officials said the approximately 90,000-square-foot center would be in the parking lot across from the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department. Officials said that final designs for the new center would be completed this summer with construction beginning at the end of the year.

Chattanooga is about to complete one of the most extensive greenway system in the country, with 25 miles of paved, connected walkways, extending from St. Elmo to downtown to the Chickamauga dam and branching to East Ridge along Chattanooga Creek.

Really excited to hear this is coming close to opening, the fact that you can ride or run from one side of town all the way to lookout mountain where you meet another 40 miles of trails is really impressive.  Add to that, all of the plans to connect trails to stringers ridge and a north shore extension down to moccasin bend will be a massive set of trails for residents to use!!

A article in the Times Free Press about the construction boom around UTC. Glad to see this happening. I used to live in Chattanooga in the late 80's and early 90's, just when things started happening there. Glad to see it is still growing into a really cool mid size city that has kept much of the older stock of building and is doing cutting edge stuff as well.

Out-of-town developers offer near record price for Chattanooga waterfront land

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/business/diary/story/2016/feb/18/casey-land-price-among-highest-ever-downtownr/350708/

A pair of out-of-town developers are interested in the riverfront land near downtown Chattanooga belonging to businessman Allen Casey, with an initial offer among the highest-ever prices per acre in the central city.

A stalking horse bid of $5.6 million is under consideration for the 6.6-acre tract, or $848,484 per acre for the vacant property across the Tennessee River from Ross's Landing, an attorney said Wednesday.

The sale price could rise even higher.

More new apartments are going up on Chattanooga's North Shore, but this complex is targeted with helping men and women with substance abuse problems stay on the straight and narrow path.

Study: Downtown Chattanooga ready for more retail

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/business/aroundregion/story/2016/mar/20/study-downtown-ready-more-retail/355876/

The study, commissioned by the downtown nonprofit redevelopment group River City Co., said there's a need for 600,000 square feet of additional retail space downtown. Such stores could include a smaller-format, urban grocery store as well as drug stores.

Because I don't see a pic of the rendering posted here.  New 600-bed dorm rising near the Roundhouse.  Ground-broken last fall.

Also, I am not much for taking pics, but if someone does not get any new pics of downtown, I'll try to get some on a lunch break sometime.  No promises, yet!  I really want to get photos of the Tivoli renovation currently underway.

I've been wanting to get out and take some pics, there is a lot going on around downtown, north shore, and southside; I just don't have the time really to do so. I need to at least snap some pics when I'm driving around and stuck at a traffic light.

Here's one from the project at the corner of manning and Cherokee on the north shore, foundation is ready to be poured. Also work at 10 Cherokee is well underway, the lot is clear and I saw them drilling holes for foundation a few days ago. I'll try and take more pictures as I'm around town!

I love the old artwork on the walls next to this when the old building at the corner was taken out!

Are the old advertising murals to be covered up ? If so, that's a shame. :(

Yes they will be, they had been covered for decades until the old building that was there was demolished.  There was an old menu  to a restraunt which was cool!
