New Orleans Development Thread

Two new mixed use developments are being proposed by Mohan Kailas, one at the old Woolworth building on Canal, and the other being a pair of mid-rises flanking the NOPSI building on Baronne.

There are also 250 new apartment units planned near the Broad / Poydras crossing:

What a joke. The Kailas clan is at it again. Just look at the lovely Plaza. Also, consider the old Slidell Factory Outlet buildings in Slidell, which were almost declared a public nuisance as a result of the inability of the motley crue to maintain the place. The NOPSI building is actually very nice inside. Unfortunately, it is also full of asbestos.

It looks like the Nolatown project may be moving forward. Their original plans were very impressive with several towers proposed.

:shades:

It's funny. I was looking through old proposals and wondered if this had been canned because the developers failed to kiss Cynthia Willard Lewis's hand before speaking publically about a project in her district without first having spoken with her. I hope the development is not polluted with members of her political clan.

There's a new article about converting two buildings are the corner of Baronne and Gravier to apartments:

http://blog.nola.com/tpmoney/2007/09/downt...dings_to_b.html

The developer, Apartment Development Services Ltd., has photos of the two buildings on their site, as well as a small rendering of a proposed 30-story building on Rampart.

This seems to be unrelated to an article nearly a month ago about Mohan Kailas' twin mid-rises on the same block of Baronne:

This is by far some of the best news since Katrina. For once a major development that has no reliance on tourism. The jobs created will be well paying jobs. There is sure to be an influx of talent to work in these great facilities. The surrounding area will be positively impacted by creation of support businesses. The neighborhoods in the immediate area will be home to persons who will be financially able to maintain properties right off of Canal St.

I can't believe people are saying Canal St. is unaccessable. Canal St. is propably the most accessable area in town. Busses, street cars, new parking garages will all be there. How good is bus service to Ochsner hospital?

Take a ride through the historic neighborhood and see how much is something that should be preserved. A lot of properties owned by absentee landlords who prior to the storm showed little respect for their tenants and after the storm have shown they don't respect the city or their neighbors who have come back and tried to reclaim their properties and their lives.

Thank you LSU & VA. Progress at last.

Last I heard, the funding has been devoted by the state, and they are going through the architectural and engineering process right now. I think they hope to break ground sometime in late 2008 on the Federal City project.

I remember hearing from some old time New Orleanians in my office, they called it "Fat City" because of the all the restaurants that were there.
