Man shot to death in New Orleans

A 31-year-old man was shot to death in New Orleans this afternoon, the Police Department said.

The man, whose name is being not being released until his family has been notified, was killed around 1 p.m. at the intersection of Overton and Miles streets in the Gentilly area.

Third District officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to the body, lying in the street next to a vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Detectives learned the as the victim was exiting a vehicle an unidentified man approached on foot, opened fire and then fled .

He was the seventh murder victim in the city in the last four days.

Wow, the N.O. isn't even safe for rappers. In 2003, Soulja Slim got shot down in almost the same manner. I think NOPD is gonna try to go after B.G. because him and VL Mike did have beef. The murdered man is local rapper VL Mike, real name Michael Allen. He grew up in the 13th Ward, not too far from me.

I feel that there. Also, parents need to take an active role in their children's lives. A lot of dudes wouldn't be on the block if their parents paid more attention to them. New Orleans' crime issue going away would be a bad thing even when it should be a good thing. Why? N.O. citizens have gotten so used to hearing daily shootings/murder reports on the news that if one day went by without a crime happening, it'd be weird.

The wife and I visited New Orleans today... we are from the Birmingham Alabama area... man I was really impressed with the hustle and bustle of New Orleans.. the people there are different.. well because I'm a conservative Christian.. but we all had a blast! I'm originially from Shreveport so I have a great love for Louisiana.. I'm proud to be from there! we're unique we're on a mission trip on the Miss Gulf coast.. I was saddened to hear how people here are kind of angry still because NO had gotten all the attention.. when the organizers here heard that our group planned an outting to NO they were like I wouldn't go there for nothin! sin city! I was like ehh ok.. sure it's a little more rowdy and there's a lot of drinking and such.. but I so enjoyed the architecture of the city.. I love photography and I was eatin that stuff up there.. all in all a really unique beautiful city!

I'm glad you enjoyed your time in New Orleans. I just want people to know that we are more than just Bourbon Street and The French Quarter. We have a thriving arts district along Julia Street, the Zoo, enjoy a street car ride up St. Charles Ave, shop to you drop along Magazine Street, and so much more.

New Orleans wins the title of "America's Most Sparkling City"

A national survey selected 10 cities from an original list of 30 and then online voters were asked to choose the city that most makes them come alive when they arrive -- what city sparkles and what city makes them feel like they're sparkling.

The cities New Orleans topped were impressive. They included the "Entertainment/Casino Capital of the World," Las Vegas; Los Angeles; "The City That Never Sleeps" (Who believes that?), New York; San Diego; Orlando, Fla.; San Francisco; the sun and sand of South Beach-Miami; the quaint Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; and Santa Monica, Calif.
