Natchez is my second favorite. It's a beautiful place but hampered by widespread poverty, as is most of Mississippi.

Not only poverty, but also *apathy* plagues much of Mississippi. You can see that by looking at the litter all over the highways. But it also extends into the workforce. Even some of the people who have good paying jobs don't seem to care about their work, just about getting a paycheck. I've run into that first hand at my local hospital. I've also heard about some quality problems at the Nissan plant. This state is never going to get out of the stone age until people start giving a darn. :(

I've only been to Mississippi once, and it was to Starkville. So I can't give a solid opinion on the other cities there, but I do know that I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Starkville. MS State has a fantasitc campus, and the women... Anyway, even in spite of MS State Bulldogs being an opponent of my Carolina Gamecocks, I will say that had things in my life gone a bit differently, I would have very much enjoyed spending my time in college there. The pronunciation of places in Mississippi never ceases to amuse me.

I didn't perceive the area I went through to be trashy. It was definitely rural. But it was like stepping into the light when I crossed the line from Alabama. The road was instantly well maintained and the medians were mowed, and no trash to be seen. Mississippi may have a ways to go, but my impression is that it was a place with more pride in itself than its neighbor to the east. I was rather dissapointed with Tuscaloosa.

What you saw was an anomaly. The local TV station reported that several groups from MSU spent days picking up litter from all around the area, in order to impress game-day visitors. Apparently it worked, and I'm glad. But, the day-to-day fact is that this state has the worst litter problem I've ever seen, and doesn't try to do anything about it. Starkville is an ok town, definitely better than its neighbors Columbus and West Point. But many people around here go to Tuscaloosa to shop and dine; it is three times the size of Starkville, has much more to offer, and really is not a bad place at all. Plus, you can get gas up to 25 cents a gallon cheaper than in the Columbus area, thanks to our greedy distributors and retailers.

I am glad you enjoyed your trip to MS, though. :)

It wasnt for a game... I went last spring for other reasons. While I was there I gave myself a tour, sort of. But maybe they did a spring leaning of sorts for some other reason?

I'm not picking on MSU or Starkville, I like them both. But as far as the women .... let me just say that I drove along the "strip" near the UA campus one night last week, and the view was breathtaking; my head was moving back and forth like one of those bobblehead dolls. On the other hand, I was at an area park this past weekend where there was an MSU sorority meeting. There were about 100 students there, and only about 5-10 worth taking a second look at :-).

Definatly Jackson, because it still has that sweet Southern charm to it, while at the same time it is growing and becoming more urban and sofisticated like many other major Southern urban centers, and yes everyone is so friendly and always have been. This is so funny, the metro Atlanta city I live in is Jackson GA!!!!

I wouldn't be holding my breath for casinos on the Pearl River, though stranger things have happened. Vicksburg is close enough to Jackson so that further incursions into non-gaming territory aren't really necessary. In truth, it's better for the state to have clearly delineated areas for gaming. This allows the casino areas to develop in a more orderly fashion. Cartel? Possibly, but opening more counties to gaming is not going to happen under Barbour's administration. The only possible exception is the addition of gaming in Jackson County. It think it's highly unlikely that voters there will approve a casino. One never knows, though.

Don't really have a favorite Mississippi town/city (hard to call some on the list "city") since I moved away so many years ago. About the only area I visit via my inlaws is the Biloxi/Gulfort area. I haven't been to Jackson in decades. And probably wouldn't even recognize the places I frequented back when I lived in the state (like Cleveland, Starkville, Meridian, Laurel, Hattiesburg, etc.) :dontknow:
