Public art is another thing that really makes me miss Portland. That was one of the first things that struck me about that city when I moved there. My favorite one was the sidewalk that had quotes from books engraved in it. I about had a heart attack when I saw a Charles Bukowski quote. Of course this was a city that the mayor won election with the slogan "Expose Yourself to Art". Here is his campaign poster. Expose yourself to art

Somehow I just can't imagine Nelson Harris doing that. David Bowers maybe.

For those who missed it, here are some pics of the St. Patrick's Day Parade which turne out to be a pretty big event. We went and rather enjoyed ourselves, though it was a bit chilly.

Oops try again.

I remember when this picture made the press all over the country some years ago. Very funny!

Once you get to the site, what category do you click to see the St. Pat's day parade pics?

Hmm.... not sure why this doesn't take you there. I'll see if I can figure it out. Sorry about that.

Never did figure it out. I'm not too good at this stuff. The pics are on the lead page of the roanoke.com website today if you want to see them.

I was in Fredericksburg for St. Patricks Day. I keep wanting to go to Roanoke for the parade and related festivities but something always comes up. Any stats for the size of the parade? I heard it was the second biggest in the country after Savanna. Is that the correct claim?

I haven't heard that. I also would be very surprise if it was true. I don't have any stats but it was a very large event. The entire Jefferson Street corridor was packed from Elm all the way down to Norkolk Ave and the railwalk. I'd venture to say several thousand people.

More good news for cultural events in Roanoke. Mayor Harris is putting in motion a Roanoake Festival of the Arts which is envisioned to showcase local perfomance and art (Roanoke Symphony, Opera, Ballet, etc.) It is to begin in 2007 and the vision is for it to be an annual event. The article mentions an arts festival in the Norkolk area as a model. Can any of you comment on that and what it is like?

It looks like Paradox WILL eventually reopen after all. The botttom section of this Roanoke times article from sunday says there is no specific date though. roanoke times

Paradox/NRG had great potential before it closed. It provided a swanky atmosphere and lots of live music. Its the only place my band has ever played in Roanoke. I hope they will be as inclined to book us when they reopen.
