This is what happens when the air is just a little too ionized for whatever reason... Note the switch contacts separating in the beginning--doesn't seem to stop the countless trillions of electrons surging through at 500,000 volts and probably several thousand amps (millions of watts of electricity).

This is a 500kv disconnect at full load... arcing like this can happen invariably.
