I agree, 84 totally kills a ton of prime land right in the middle of the city. Being cut of from the river sucks too, but I think 84 is a bigger problem if I had to choose.

In general, yes I 84 is the bigger problem. The reason I chose I 91 first was 1)because it would be much easier to relocate and/or bury I 91 (only about a 1/8 of a mile runs through the CBD). I 84 on the other hand snakes through downtown for at least a 1/2 mile. That's a huge difference. 2) If the I 91 relocation is a success, I 84 relocation will certainly follow.

I agree. The only thing I would miss is the view of the towers while driving through an I84 tunnel.

Neither highway is a real problem. Would more access to the river be nice, sure. But that can be accomplished wihtout moving either highway.

And there's no proof that moving I-84 would accomplish anything except putting more millions in the pockets of the friends of the DOT.

If Hartford had the billiion dollars you guys want to spend on infrastructure than high speed transit would be the way to go. A high speed link to Bradley, to Rentschler, to UConn, to West Hartford Center or New Britain would make a much biger difference.

Or build the arena.

But there isn't an iota of evidence that moving I-84 would do a darn thing.

isn't there already an alternative to moving the highway that gave access to the river? like a park or something that was built over the highway?

SOCOM:

The 'Big Dig II'? Come on, As much as it would be nice to have access -- did people forget STATE STREET LANDING? -- it would be ripe for corruption. The BIG DIG in Boston was suppose to take 10 years... and what happened, it took nearly 25 years!! And I heard that contractors were arrested for sending them INFERIOR CEMENT!

Sorry, I would put that money to better use. Trains (Waterbury to Hartford for commuters, and to rebuild tracks (sorry do we really need so many rail-trails), waterways and ports improvments and airport improvments.

Yes 84 is a mess, but Beatice Fox Auerbech wanted exits every 1/2 miles to bring shoppers to Fox's. There was suppose to be a belt route around the city (291, 484 and 384) but the NIMBYs didn't want it. The Stack in Farmington is the symbol of mismanagement by Connecticut's Highway department.

don't forget that they're now fixing the big dig because it leaks.
