Public Libraries Will Offer Heritage Quest Class

Roanoke Public Libraries will sponsor "Heritage Quest:

Get Connected" tonight at 6 p.m. This one-hour evening class to be

held in the Computer Lab of the Main Library at 706 S. Jefferson St.

to show you how to get the most out of this family history database.

On HQ you will find U.S. census records, abstracts of Revolutionary

War pension files, keyword searchable history and genealogy books and

an index to magazine and journal articles. Just added this week,

search Freedman's Bank records, 1865-1874. This bank was established

to serve African Americans.

This database is accessible from any computer with Internet access by

using your Roanoke Valley library card number. The class is free, but

registration is required.

Roanoke Public Libraries to Teach Navigating the Internet Class

There are millions of Web pages on the Internet, but

how do you locate the information you want? And more importantly,

how can you determine if it is reliable and accurate? In Februray,

Roanoke Public Libraries will sponsor "Navigating the Internet," a

class to help computer users learn effective use of the Internet. Two

sessions will be offered: 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Raleigh

Court Branch Library (853-2240); and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at

the Main Library (853-2477). This class will give you the tools to

become a more successful searcher.

The class is free, but registration is required. Contact the host

library with questions and to sign-up.

Alternate parking for Kazim Temple Shrine Circus

The Roanoke Civic Center is proud to host the

48th annual Kazim Temple Shrine Circus Friday, February 3 through

Sunday, February 5.

Due to the expected attendance for the Circus, FREE shuttle bus

service to the Civic Center Coliseum will be available. Shuttles will

operate from the parking garage at the corner of Williamson Road and

Tazewell Avenue on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, on

Saturday the parking garage at the corner of Church Avenue and 2nd

Street will also have shuttle service. Details are as follows:

On Friday, February 3, shuttles will begin running at 6:00 pm from

the Williamson Rd/Tazewell parking garage.

On Saturday, February 4, shuttles will run from both garages,

beginning at 9:00 am.

On Sunday, February 5, shuttles will begin running at 12:00 pm from

the Williamson Rd/Tazewell parking garage.

(To get to the Williamson Rd/ Tazewell Ave parking garage, take Elm

Avenue Exit 6 off Interstate 5-81 and follow garage directional

signs.)

Shuttles will run continuously until all guests have been returned to

Public Libraries to Hold Special Story-Telling Workshop, Storytime Programs in Februray

The Youth Services Department of the Roanoke Public

Libraries will offer a storytelling workshop and two storytime

programs in honor of African-American History Month. Brenda

Brown-Grooms, a storyteller, will teach the workshop and lead the

storytime sessions.

The program schedule is as follows:

• Storytime at Melrose Branch Library, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 4 p.m.

• Workshop at Gainsboro Branch Library, Thursday, Feb. 9, 4 p.m.

• Storytime at Main Library, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 10:30 a.m.

Public Libraries, Harrison Museum to Sponsor Gospel Music Program

On Saturday, Feb. 25, Roanoke Public Libraries Youth

Services Department, in partnership with the Harrison Museum of

African American Culture, will host a gospel music program at the

Harrison Museum beginning at 2 p.m. Held in honor of African-American

History Month, the performance features Exclaim Records recording

artists PK, a Roanoke-based, young adult ensemble directed by Wes

Witcher.

Community School Artwork to be Displayed at Main Library in February

The Youth Services Department of the Roanoke Public

Libraries' Main Branch will display the artwork of Community School

Middle School students throughout the month of February.

In honor of African-American History month, the students of Art

Teacher Cherry Chapman have created 10 original pieces inspired by

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. These pieces

will be part of the display at the Main Branch.

Jackson Park Branch Library Will Display Student Art

The city's Jackson Park Branch Library will display

paintings and drawing work created by the students of Stonewall

Jackson Middle School under the direction of Art Teacher Kristin

Roanoke Police Department Prepares for Superbowl Sunday

The Roanoke Police Department is warning citizens about the dangers

of driving while impaired. A roving patrol, targeting aggressive and

impaired drivers, will be conducted this weekend. If you plan to

attend a Superbowl party, make sure you have a designated driver.

In addition to the roving patrol, the Police Department will conduct

its weekly radar enforcement, in response to citizen concerns.

Beginning the week of February 5, 2006 officers will conduct radar

enforcement in the following areas:

Templeton Ave., NE - 1500 block

Fairhope Rd., NW

9th St., SE

Belleville Rd., SW - 1800 block

Roanoke Police Department to Host Charity Golf Tournament

The Roanoke Police Department is sponsoring the 9th Annual Charity

Golf Tournament to benefit Special Olympics Virginia and the Virginia

Police Chiefs Foundations CYCLE Program. The event will be held on

June 3, 2006 at the Ashley Plantation Gold Club in Daleville.

Shotgun starts are at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A $240.00 entry fee

per team includes lunch, refreshments, and cart and greens fees for a

Clerk shot in ateempted Exxon Robbery, expected to recover

A store clerk was shot during an attempter robbery wednesday is

expected to recover. Karen Merkey Gallupe, was shot at the Exxon

in the 800 block of Orange Avenue NE. No arrests have been made.

Gunman holds up Salem auto store

Salem Police are investing a robbery Thursday at Advanced Auto Parts

in the 1400 block of Electric Road. Police said the man was about 6 feet

2 inches tall and weighed about 180 pounds. He was wearing gray pants,

a black hooded sweatshirt, a gray ski mask, and black gloves. Call Salem

Police at 375-3083 ot Crime Line at 344-8500.

Theft in Park

3 Thugs snatched a garmet bag from a man at Elmwood Park, according

to Police. On February 2nd, the suspects assaulted him and took his garmet

bag, which contained clothes.

Man injured in hit-and-run in Roanoke

An 18-year-old man was injured in a hit-and-run crash

in Southeast Roanoke on Friday afternoon, police said.

The man was hit shortly after 3 p.m. as he was trying

to cross Bullit Avenue at Eighth Street.

Public Meeting Will Allow Input on Update of Roanoke Valley Conceptual Greenway Plan

The Roanoke Police Department is hosting a Robbery Prevention

Seminar on February 16, 2006, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Hotel

Roanoke. This event is open to business owners and employees

throughout the Roanoke Valley; and is designed to teach them how to

lessen their chances of becoming victims of robbery, and how to react

if they are targeted by a criminal. Members of Crime Line will also

discuss how their organization works with local law enforcement

agencies to reward people who report criminal activity.

Roanoke Police Department Conducts Drug Investigation

The Roanoke Police Department in a continuous effort to address

illegal drug activity in the City of Roanoke recently conducted a

drug operation that has resulted in 65 indictments and warrants

involving 29 people. "Operation Sleeper" utilized an undercover

officer who purchased illegal narcotics. Efforts were focused on

street level drug dealers working in the following areas: Old

Southwest, Hurt Park and the surrounding area. This operation began

in August 2005 and continued through December 2005.

This is part of the department's continued effort to enhance the

quality of life for citizens by getting drug dealers off our

streets. In June 2005 the Roanoke Police Department conducted

Operation Crackdown and took part in Operation Valley Crackdown.

Both focused on the illegal drug trade involving mid to upper level

dealers. Operation Valley Crackdown was a cooperative effort

involving numerous state and federal agencies. The focus of

Operation Crackdown was within the city.

Street Closure: Centre Avenue, NW

The westbound traffic lane on Centre Avenue, NW between

1st Street, NW and Jordan Alley will be closed from 9 a.m. on Monday,

Feb. 13, until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 9, to allow Martin Brothers

Contractors to remodel the building on the northeast corner of 1st

Street, NW and Centre Avenue.

A detour will not be established. East and westbound traffic on

Centre Avenue, NW will be able to enter the Gainsboro Parking Garage

and its parking lot, and traffic exiting this facility will only be

able to exit eastbound toward Jefferson Street. Martin Bros.

occurred on February 8, 2006. Officers were called at 10:25 p.m. to

Food Lion in the 4300 block of Franklin Rd., SW. The victim stated

that a black male walked into the store, brandished a firearm and

fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. No arrests have

been made. Anyone with information concerning this or other crimes

Officers were called on February 10, 2006 at 1:05 a.m. to an

apartment in the 2100 block of Tinker Dr., NE. Officers found the

bodies of two females. No arrests have been made. Anyone with

Roanoke Police Department Reminds Citizens of Snow, Ice and Sleet Removal

As a reminder to all citizens for todays snow, the Code of the City of

Roanoke (Sec.30-16) states that it is the responsibility of the property

owner orlandlord to have sidewalks cleared of snow, ice or sleet

within three hours after the precipitation has stopped falling. If

the snow, ice or sleet has fallen overnight, sidewalks must be

cleared by 9:00 a.m. the next morning.

Every six (6) hours that snow, ice or sleet is allowed to remain in

violation of this section shall be considered as a separate offense.

In case there is no occupant of the premises, and the owner or agent

cannot be found, the city can have the sidewalk cleared, at the

expense of the owner, with a penalty of twenty (20) percent added.

Roanoke Police Department Makes Arrest in Robbery and Attempted Robbery

An arrest has been made in a robbery and attempted robbery that both

occurred on February 12, 2006. Garet Michael Fitzgerald,

30-years-old of Roanoke, was arrested on February 12, 2006 in the

1700 block of Westview St., NW. Mr. Fitzgerald has been charged with

attempted robbery in connection with an incident at Community Grocery

in the 100 block of Elm Ave., SW. He has also been charged with

robbery in connection with an incident at Stop In Food Stores, in the

1800 block of Memorial Ave., SW. No one was hurt in either

incident. Charges are pending in another robbery that also occurred

on February 12, 2006 at the Wilco Store in the 2100 block of Orange

Ave., NE.

On a related topic, the Roanoke Police Department is hosting a

Firewood giveaway Feb. 25

Roanoke Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry will give

away firewood-quality wood from 8 a.m. until

4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Fallon Park.

The wood has not been cut or split, and a loader will be available.

Those interested should bring a pickup truck or large vehicle and

enter the park on the Wise Avenue side through the Tinker Creek

Greenway parking lot.

Street Closure: Ferdinand Avenue, SW

The Western Virginia Water Authority will close

Ferdinand Avenue, SW, between Elm Avenue and 10th Street, from 10

a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, until 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, to make

repairs to a sanitary sewer line.

East and westbound traffic on Elm Avenue will be detoured north on

5th Street to Campbell Avenue; then west on Campbell Avenue to 10th

Street and then south on 10th Street to Ferdinand Avenue. A detour

for eastbound traffic on Ferdinand Avenue approaching 10th Street

will not be established; however, drivers can use the established

detour in reverse.

The Western Virginia Water Authority will furnish, place, maintain

and remove all signs, barricades, etc. to close Ferdinand Avenue.

The city will place signs at key locations to notify motorists of

this closure and the detour signs.

Restaurant owner dies

Restaurant owner Al Pollard is dead at age 45. Early reports on the cause were unclear, but he apparently passed away in his sleep at his Roanoke home.

The Roanoke Police Department is responding to citizens concerns over

speeding. Beginning the week of February 19, 2006 officers will

conduct radar enforcement in the following areas:

Brandon Ave., SW - 4000 block

Homicide

The Roanoke Police Department is investigating a shooting that

occurred on May 20, 2006. Officers were near the 1600 block of

Melrose Ave., NW at approximately 3 a.m. when they heard multiple

gunshots. Upon arriving to the 1600 block of Melrose Ave., NW,

officers saw a large crowd of people who were attending a private

gathering. Eight individuals who were attending that gathering had

been shot, one fatally. No arrests have been made. Anyone with

Police now say the sight of the shooting was an illegal club offering gambling, alcohol and food. It was supposedly frequented by some of the biggest drug dealers in Roanoke and might have been in competition with similar speakeasies in the area.

Man injured in SE Roanoke shooting.

A man was injured in a shooting Monday in Southeast Roanoke, police said. Brian Steven Dearing, 24, of Roanoke told officers he was standing outside in the 3400 block of Ventnor Avenue when two men approached him and one of them shot him. Police said Dearing went to an acquaintance's house in the same block before rescuers took him to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Roanoke Police Department Conducts Occupant Safety Checkpoint

The Roanoke Police Department conducted an occupant safety checkpoint

in conjunction with the final day of the Click It or Ticket

campaign. The checkpoint was held on June 1, 2006 from 10:50 a.m. to

12:50 a.m. in the 1200 block of Wasena Ave., SW. Only two seat belt

violations were found out of 205 cars stopped during the checkpoint.

The following citations were written:

- 2 seat belt

- 1 general equipment violation

- 2 expired state inspections

- 2 expired state registrations

- 5 suspended operators license

- 1 traffic offense

The Roanoke Police Department also gave away gifts and gift cards to

various drivers who were wearing their seat belts. The items were

donated by local businesses and utilized as a way of rewarding

citizens for wearing their seat belts.

Roanoke Police Department Investigates Burglaries

The Roanoke Police Department is investigating two burglaries in

which a male entered the homes of women. The first occurred on May

12, 2006. Officers were called at 3:14 a.m. to a home in the

Southeast zone of the city. The second occurred on June 1, 2006.

Officers were called at 5:18 a.m. to a home in the Southeast zone of

the city. No one was hurt in either incident, and no property was

taken. Police are investigating the possibility of the two incidents

being related. The suspect is described as a black male with short

hair, between 15 and 23 years old, approximately 5 feet, nine inches

tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. Homeowners are encouraged

to properly secure their homes and call police if they notice any

suspicious persons or activity in their neighborhoods. Anyone with

additional information concerning this or other crimes should call

the Roanoke Police Department at 853-5959 or Crime Line at 344-8500.

Street Closure: Norfolk Avenue SE

H. T. Bowling, Inc. will close Norfolk Avenue, SE,

between Market Street and 3rd Street, SE to install storm and

sanitary sewer lines as part of the construction project for the new

Art Museum from 9 a.m., Monday, June 26, until 5 p.m., Friday, June

30.

Streets to Be Closed for Bike Race

On Sunday, July 2, the following streets will be closed

between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. for a bike race sponsored by Virginia

Amateur Sports:

Norfolk Avenue between Third Street, SE and its dead end just west

of First Street, SW

Salem Avenue between First Street, SW and Market Street, SE

First Street, SW, Jefferson Street and Market Street, SE between

Salem Avenue and Norfolk Avenue

The following streets will be closed to through traffic:

Wall Street, Jefferson Street and First Street, SW between

Campbell Avenue and Salem Avenue

Campbell Avenue Closing

On Sunday, July 9, Campbell Avenue will be closed

between First and Second Streets from 6 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. to allow

Breakell, Inc. to lift construction materials into the State and City

Building, 102 Campbell Ave.
