HOME RUN DERBY CONTESTANTS ANNOUNCED

Home Run Derby contestants have been announced for the 2006 HCA Virginia Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game presented by Lewis-Gale Medical Center. The Home Run Derby will begin at 5:30 PM as part of the Coca-Cola All-Star Fanfest.

Carolina League contestants include Winston-Salem IF Chris Kelly (ML Affiliate - Chicago White Sox), Frederick OF Nolan Reimold (ML Affiliate - Baltimore), Kinston OF Brian Barton (ML Affiliate - Cleveland), and Salem C Lou Santangelo (ML Affiliate - Houston).

California League contestants include Visalia IF Reid Brignac (ML Affiliate - Tampa Bay), Modesto OF Matt Miller (ML Affiliate - Colorado), Rancho Cucamonga IF Sean Rodriguez (ML Affiliate - Los Angeles Dodgers) and High Desert IF Mike Stodalka (ML Affiliate - Kansas City)

Wednesday Night's series opener at Lynchburg was postponed

due to rain. The game will be made up as a part of a

doubleheader thursday night at 6:05 PM.

Salem ranks 3rd in attendnce with 126,760 people in 38 games

and is 3rd in average with 3,355 per night.

A new sports complex opens this Saturday in Botetourt. Economic development officials expect big gains from increased lodging, retail and restaurant activity. The new complex, combined with Salems sports complex are expected to attract more tournaments, such as the 7 regional and national youth baseball and adult softball tournaments already booked at the complex.

Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitor's Bureau claims last summer's men's softball tournament drew 9,200 people who spent over $5 million in the area.
