Katrina Memorial

A memorial to the victims of Katrina is being built on the site of the former BIloxi Visitor's Canter, an 1880's cottage obliterated by the storm. Here's the twist- the memorial is being built by the cast of Extreme Makeover- Home Edition, a television show. I haven't seen any drawings of what the memorial will look like, but it sounds reasonably good- a curving wall of black marble with the names of those who lost their lives (in Mississippi) to the storm. I'm a bit troubled by the idea that it's being done by a television show. Granted, the real benefactor of the memorial is the Roy Anderson Construction Company, a local giant which has built most of the casinos in town. While I don't think it's too soon to build a memorial, I remain troubled by this. Article from the Gulf Coast News...

Actually, I do think it's a little too soon. I wish they would have waited at least a year after the fact. Are all missing persons from MS accounted for? I'm not too disturbed by the fact that it will be televised; it gives MS residents as well as all Americans the chance to actively view something very important in the works.

I don't have a problem with the memorial they are building. I beleive it could be a rallying point as the coast rebuilds. But, in the future, after the rebuilding effort has some history, I belive a major memorial and museum should be built in a prominent location, either in Biloxi or possbily at the intersection of 49 and 90 in Gulfport.
