Parking Garages in SC: Love 'em or hate 'em?

Ummm, perhaps you guys missed this in the descriptions:

"The garage will feature retail space along Lincoln Street facing the Convention Center and glass stair and elevator towers on two corners."

"The USC Strings Program will occupy space fronting Park Street and across the street from the USC Music School. It features several rehearsal rooms, practice rooms, and other support space for this popular University outreach program, and addresses the University's goal to provide animation and activity on the street."

I snapped another picture of Greenville's Spring Street Garage's Bookend. The garage is hidden to the south and soon to the north by condos and retail space. This has to be ideal to live in... You have covered parking on the level where you live, it's downtown living, and you have great views...

They should be required to have some ground level streetscape retail. Small spaces would be OK. There should be an ordinance....

I was advised that we should have a thread dedicated to the many parking garages located throughout the state. Do you think they are necessary? Should they be built above ground, or below? Should they have a standard design, or should they carry significant architectural appeal? What are some examples of good design and appeal? What are the poorly designed garages in our state? What defines a good exterior design? What is the most effective use for parking facilities in our urban areas? --- You get the idea. ;)

Post photos and anything else you think will help this discussion here. This should be fun. :)

How's this for a parking garage:

This will be going up in Jacksonville. The top floors (unsure exactly how many) will be condos. Pretty snazzy design; looks really tropical. Hopefully some street-level retail will be integrated at the ground floor.
