PROPOSED: Trump Casino

Cotuit

Recommended Posts

This is a sensitive issue for Johnston. From Projo:

"Johnston Representatives Joseph Voccola and Stephen Ucci publicly denounced The Providence Journal for noting, in yesterday's story about the casino proposal, that their town boasts the highest percentage of people of Italian ancestry of almost any community in the U.S., according to the 2000 census. They said the mention, in this context, could be misread as a slur."

that has to be per capita.

Certainly...but how silly, irrelevant, and embarrassing for it even to be a point of reference. 230 years and STILL referring to our ancestors from other nations!

In any event, have the Trump people expressed any interest in being in the city?

I am a bit surprised that they are looking in a suburb as they always focus on center cities...they are building a large condo in Tampa next year.

I'm not sure we would really want this given his taste in architecture. As the NY AIA guide to architecture memorably put it, his taste in architecture is more like Colt 45 malt liquor than Dom Perignon champagne.

Or build a 50-story corporate tower downtown.

That's a nice hotel. The only good that can come out of this circus is a competitive bidding process. I don't think Trump has any understanding or appreciation for all the time and effort the tribe has committed to their casino quest. West Warwick has been in big trouble for years, and has not done well to attract new business investment. The property tax rate is the highest of any town in the state, the Arctic neighborhood is in danger of being flattened in favor of a Nicholas Cambio big box development, and the roads are arguably the worst in the civilized world... some have not been resurfaced since the days when the mills were open. The casino will come one day, and the town needs this cash.

I think if the Narragansetts get Trumped, this is a major loss for the town of West Warwick. They've had development at the industrial park at exit 8, an attractive highway accessible parcel, on hold indefinitely during almost a decade of gambling legalization proceedings. I also like the casino further away from downtown Providence so it does not compete with major events in the city.

What about old Lincoln Park 10 minutes up 295?! With a brand new full-service casino right off the highway, what are the prospects of patrons driving up to Lincoln to play video slots? Fugghettaboutit!

Agreed. G-Tech is a positive masterpiece compared to some of the brutal towers he's afflicted NYC with...

Agreed. Trump is building a 50 floor condo in Tampa that is 1) grossly out of scale to the city and 2) a massive and oppressive - well, almost brutal - structure. Adds little to Tampa but does satisfy his ego.

But is there anybody who actually dislikes the Chicago building?

As I said, not all Trump is bad Trump. If you stick to your guns, you can get quality out of him. And even that Tampa building isn't terrible. At least, it had potential. It was just misapplied, IMO. If that had been a corporate design rather than a residential design, but keeping that same basic shape & features, the result could have been downright breathtaking. And you can't really accuse Trump of building something out of scale. It is, I guess, but no more so than the rest of Tampa's skyline.

Well it dosent matter how the building looks in Johnston because it will be the only one lol. I live in Johnston, and it isnt a city anyway so it wont be misplaced in a skyline. But the thing about this casino is that its going right next to the landfill, who would want to stay at a resort while smelling garbage all day? I like the idea of a casino because maybe more will come from it and turn the town around a little bit because we are nothing, but the location is terrible.

I don't understand this attitude coming out of Johnston. I don't understand why Johnston being nothing is a problem. It's a bedroom community, what's wrong with that? Why do some people in Johnston feel that the town needs to be placed on the map as it were in some way?

That's not why we were talking about it. It's a casino, of course that will be gaudy. But we were talking about his taste in architecture because I suggested that he build us a large (500 foot) corporate tower in Providence. My comment, in turn, followed from an earlier comment that Trump, by investing in other Rhode Island projects, could curry some favor with state officials and win support for his Johnston casino proposal.

The state constitution needs to be amended to even consider any casino. Carcieri will veto any amendment that would allow the expansion of gambling. Trump's going to need to do more than make new friends here to get his Palace on the Dump built.

People look at Johnston as scum, everybody looks down on us. Especially being from the high school, the school is one of the worst in the state and it is talked about by students parents and teahcers.

I would just like to be looked at as something other than just plain old Johnston.

I think casinos are pretty scummy, so a casino would do nothing to improve Johnston in my eyes. Better the town should focus on improving it's schools, and hopefully closing and creatively reusing the dump.

All of the state's public schools are terrible, the problem is the teachers are not held to the standards of quality that educators in other states must adhere to. The school committees don't have the money to fund pay raises, sick days, vacations, health plans, and pensions so the union strikes. Some towns have worked without a contract for over a year and in this case the teachers work-to-rule, which means they function as glorified substitutes. Full pay to sit and read Star magazine while the kids pass notes. That's why test scores are in the toilet... in Rhode Island you cannot fire a teacher, no matter how bad. My English teacher used to run the class drunk my junior and senior year. I saw her outside the building one day and it was completely obvious, she just lit a cigarette and walked the other way. Bad teachers are like wiseguys... they're protected and don't even try to do anything about it.

Invest in that condo downtown! In 15 years you can sell it, move to Chad Brown and send your kids to LaSalle!
