Houses all over the area decorated with "tacky lights" draw hundreds of people driving through various Richmond neighborhoods. You can even rent limos and make a party of it.

As outlandish as many of the homes on the "Tacky Light Tours" may be, I'm told just the opposite is true along Monument Avenue between The Boulevard and Lee Circle. Word is that homes along the famous avenue are impeccably and elegantly illuminated after dark.

.Richmond is famous for its "Tacky Lights" in residential neighborhoods during the holiday season (see posting below this one.)

But people tell me homes and mansions which are decorated on Monument Avenue, especially between The Boulevard and Allen Avenue, don't fall in the "tacky" categorty (except maybe for the lighted automobile :) .)

Here's a piece from Richmond dot com with pix:

The Richmond Coliseum, that huge spaceship structure downtown between 5th and 7th Streets, seems to have stepped up its entertainment booking.

Mike Epps is in for a show at 7PM on Sunday, February 12th.

Elton John comes into the building for a concert on Saturday, March 17th

and The Zac Brown Band will play at 7PM on Sunday, March 25th. (They'll compete that day with Asking Alexandria/Trivium who will be doing a 5:30PM concert around the corner at The National.)

Yeah..... hopefully I can snag some tickets to Elton John before it (hopefully) sells out..... I wonder what Mr. Elton's reaction will be to performing in such an ancient structure.... :ermm:

He's played the Ric Coliseum at least once -- in fact, I think as recently as 2 years ago.

Here's the website for the venue. Actually, I don't think it's as bad as some make out. Except, I must admit that the top balconies at each end (added about a decade ago) are pretty scary to access if you suffer from acrophobia. Last time I was there was a couple (or three) years ago to see the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes and the only available seats were WAAAAAAY up there. :shok:

People in the weather business say tomorrow will be clear and pleasant, and tomorrow night as well. That means a lot of folks should be out taking in First Friday events.

Here is a preview (which includes some galleries which also will be open tonight -- Thursday.)

There are lots of dining options.

THE LION KING opens Wednesday, February 15th at The Landmark Theatre for a 4-week run. Locals are gobbling up tickets and tour buses from miles around will bring hundreds of people to see this gigantic show.

Oh man!! I HAVE to see that! While I'm sure that the first few shows are sold out already, I'm hoping to see it. It would be a landmark experience at such a landmark theatre! (corny joke, haw haw  )

Also, one could infer from the sheer popularity and rarity of the show (outside of NYC) that it would be quite expensive. Then again, I'm on a Capital One salary. Cheers!

Also opening Wednesday, February 15th for an eleven performance run at The Richmond Coliseum is Ringling Bros, Barnum & Bailey Circus. :good:

And once again.....something I will get tickets for....in a few years..... my wife and I are expecting now, and in about 6 or 7 years, I'm hoping I can proudly take my son or daughter to this brand spanking new or few years old Richmond Arena and say: this is what our city is like. I'm hoping that if Flying Squirrels fans can make an advocacy group, then people can start one for a new coliseum. Its a longshot, but hopeful.... :hi:

But for now, I'll gladly stick with a circus that can happily come to a forty year-old coliseum without complaint. :fun:

Also, the infamous Elephant March will take place tonight I believe.... the train I think will arrive at midnight. It takes the circus elephants to the coliseum through a series of twists and turns involving crossing the Manchester Bridge, marching through downtown and into the backdoors of the arena. I wish I could go, but of course I have that Capital One salary that I don't want to lose if I want tickets for Lion King

Here's more on that march: http://www2.richmond.com/entertainment/2012/feb/07/2/date-circus-elephant-march-ar-1670708/
