While thousands were observing Civil War and Emancipation Celebrations nearby, another large crowd was on hand to see and admire the Richmond Street-Art Festival in the Power Plant at the foot of 12th Street and on the Flood Wall.

The print story is dated, but the pictures are from yesterday's Richmond dot com:

Just a few words of clarification to any one reading this who may wonder about the Power Plant and another subject described in a separate thread as Reynolds North Property:

In the first picture: The tan building visible through the doorway is part of the Reynolds property that is about to be demolished and replaced with apartments. The white structure in front of it is the beginning of the Richmond Flood Wall.

Pictures $#4, #8 and #9 are clear views of the very unusual building called The Power Plant with it's wall of arched windows and a roof of steel girders. Behind the wall on which murals are being painted is the vast interior of the plant. The property is owned by The Cordish Company. Unfortunately, it has remained vacant since the Cordish purchase but has often been the subject of speculation, most often, as a destination restaurant. On going development of the Reynolds property will likely bring enough traffic to encourage development of the Power Plant.

Here's something I'd like to see -- a collaboration between The Richmond Symphony and dancers from the Richmond Ballet.

In addition to all the stage entertainment this weekend, NASCAR fans from all over the country will be visiting the city (see Sports thread.)

Hotels are sure to be heavily booked, and bars, clubs and restaurants will see a spike in activity.

SHEN YUN PERFORMANCES OF CHINESE DANCE AND MUSIC has cancelled both matinee and evening performances on Saturday, May 5th at The Carpenter Theatre.

I checked the Carpenter Theatre box office today and the cancellation of both shows on May 5th was confirmed. Refunds will be available at point of purchase.

Verify at http://www,richmondcenterstage.com. Click "Events" then click "tickets" and search for May 5th.

No explanation was offered for the cancellation. In fact I was told tickets had been selling quite well.

President Obama will be speaking this Saturday, May 5th at VCU's Siegel Center. Doors open at 1:30PM.

Last fall he filled all 9,000+ seats at the University of Richmond's Robins Center. Capacity at Siegel Center is less than 8,000 and I'll bet a quarter thousands are turned away -- especially after his visit yesterday to Kabul.

If I'm one of those unable to get into the building (my 3-week Richmond vacation begins tomorrow) I'm going to check out the QUE PASA FESTIVAL at the Canal Basin.

Happy Cinco De Mayo, everyone! :fun:

Although I was not able to attend neither the OBAMA SPEAKING or the ¿QUE PASA? festival, I was able to visit the annual ARTS IN THE PARK in Byrd Park, and got some lovely soaps and candles (not anything to expensive ) crafted by artists and merchants from all over the nation, along with local artists, too. There were even lovely oil paintings of the Richmond skyline, and even this one portrait of Richmond buildings and statues technologically edited and shaped together on the James River to spell "RVA". Hard to describe in words, but overall a neat event! Now it is starting to rain, but nonetheless, I am about to head towards the Greater Richmond Convention Center for the ASIAN FESTIVAL for my Indian heritage :camera:

Also, I forgot to mention this, but also as I was walking in the afternoon from the parking lot towards ARTS IN THE PARK, I happened to notice the What Do You Stand For? paintings scattered along the hiking and skills trails. These are the same ones commisioned by the local art group ART 180 to stand along Monument Ave. for the 10K and Easter on Parade, but not before coming under controversy and debate that made City Council make the group take it down after the Parade. It's nice to see that they set it up here for the entrance to the ARTS IN THE PARK, though...

Has the Hippodrome Theater finally got it's kickstart?

Maybe :good: . Richmond.com reports about the new RVA GROOVES 8-week concert series which started yesterday with a performance by MINT CONDITION. I don't know how the turnout was, but I found a link from the Richmond.com article that is pretty helpful about the performer lineup!

For those interested in a little comedy, BRIAN REGAN, the popular comedian known for his "clean" comedy is coming to the Carpenter Theater (CenterStage) on May 17th. If you don't know who he is or what the experience would be like, you can look at some YouTube videos with some of his most popular skits like "Stupid in School" or "Hospitals". I find him quite funny, and probably will purchase tickets soon.

Here's something REALLY worth waiting for!

BOYZ II MEN and GEORGE CLINTON & THE PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC will be headlining the Stone Soul Music & Food Festival.

Boyz II Men, of course, are one of the most famous groups of the 80s and 90s, winning FOUR Grammys. And "Clinton & P Funk" of course are also the lovable ol' music group, 40 years strong. Plus, more hip hop, gospel, and R&B music groups will also take the stage.

And if music isn't your forte, then you can try all the delicious food that will be served at the festival.

Mark your calenders, folks! :hi:

This Saturday, May 26th, will be a busy day at The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

In conjunction with the traveling exhibit, MAHARAJA: Splendors of Indian Kings, there will be a full schedule of events.

From today's Richmond dot com:

http://www2.richmond...day-ar-1937606/

I just got back from visiting the MAHARAJA exhibit today  .

It was a very splendid collection of artifacts and paintings and jewelry from India in the 18th & 19th century. I loved it, and was fascinated about all I learned about my own country after seeing the exhibit.

And now, to end the night, I am off to KEBAB & BIRYANI in West Broad Village for dinner, with my wife and my daughter  .

Oh, and tomorrow, to celebrate Memorial Day (even though it is the day after), I will be seeing the ROCKETTS RED GLARE fireworks spectacle downtown.

Here is the link for ROCKETTS RED GLARE:

I'm attending tonight! I'm looking forward to the spectacle, and there will also be bands performing, plus beer, wine, and shaved ice (still a kid inside :D )

I will be sharing the experience with my wife and Carrie, of course! Looking forward very much to it!
