The very popular Broad Appetit is an annual affair ofering tasty samples of food from dozens of Richmond's best restaurants.

The 100 to 300 blocks of West Broad Street in The Gallery District will be closed to vehicular traffic from 11AM 'til 6PM.

Andrew Cothern of Style Weekly provides details including names of participants:

Richmond's annual jazz festival, officially called JAZZ AT MAYMONT will take place over the weekend of August 10-12. Friday night's activities (Aug. 10) will take place in The Hippodrome Theatre on North 2nd Street with Lonnie Liston Smith headlining a group of local musicians.

Liston will also close the program on Sunday (Aug. 12) on the stage at Maymont, a beautiful park adjacent to Byrd Park in the city's near west end.

Several famous jazz, soul and R&B artists will be appearing. One of my personal favorites, John Pizzarelli, will perform on Sunday.

Looks like tonight's Friday Cheers concert has been cancelled due to the weather....

http://www2.richmond.com/entertainment/2012/jun/01/5/chris-young-gets-ready-take-over-browns-island-ar-1953141/

And it is probably because of the tornado watch in effect for most of VA until around 9:00 tonight....

But from what I can guess, First Fridays is still a go! :good:

GREEK FESTIVAL today. I'm attending with the wife and you-know-who

http://www2.richmond...012-ar-1953224/

Forgot to add an interesting point: if you are planning to go, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING YOURSELF INTO.

And by that I mean parking. A little off topic, but I was blindsided last night with the classic parking situation while trying to see 21 JUMP STREET at the Byrd. I encircled Dixie Donuts, the Byrd, and BlowToad 3 times, went inside a public garage behind the Byrd (sort of), and came out with no luck. After 5 minutes, the movie I had realized, had already started, and so I just drove down the Boulevard to have my first visit at MOVIELAND, where I saw Dark Shadows.

Long story short, I KNOW the Greek Fest is a popular event. And that means parking will be an issue. I would just like to warn everyonw who plans on attending to start scoping out spaces before you leave, so you don't wind up quitting. :P

Just came back from the Greek Fest! Lots of fun, food, dancing, and people walking around with their own bottles of Greek wine and beer! Also got a few (cough, cough, expensive :whistling: ) things from the market inside the lovely church! Overall a very wonderful experience! And was very crowded, but hey, that's what happens when a loved tradition has gone on for 36 years! :fun:

Today's forecast is for some heavy storms this afternoon, but if it clears you might want to head downtown to the River/Canal Walk.

Tonight only, the Monster Food Truck event that has been such a success at Virginia Historical Society on The Boulevard will be along the Flood Wall in the parking area that used to be the Reynold's North property across from the Lady Bird Building (Off The Hookah and Hat Factory.)

The trucks will be out in force (see website below for participating vendors) between 6 and 9PM. During the same hours, the musical group ALABAMA SHAKES will be performing at Friday Cheers on Brown's Island. It's a nice stroll on the canal walk between the two events and you'll be able to see the new murals as you pass through the old power plant.

And if you want to stay out late, there will be plenty of activity in the nearby clubs.

Dean Hoffermeyer's photos from yesterday's RTD of last night's fireworks display are crisp, clear and highly professional.

They were taken from Virginia's War Memorial at the foot of Belvidere Street on the north shore of the James.

I'm baffled why there are no photos taken from the south side showing the city's illuminated skyline.

From today's RTD:

PS: There will be another huge fireworks display tonight after the sold-out baseball game at The Diamond.

It may be an issue of viewing angle. They launch the fireworks from Belle Isle, so get Belle Isle and the skyline in the shot, you'd need to be either near 22nd and Riverside (perhaps on top of the apartment tower there) or somewhere around the Mayo bridge.

Byrd Park, south of The Upper Fan, is where Dogwood Dell and The Carillon are located. The Dell is an amphitheatre which can accommodate 1,500 on tiered grass levels, and there is space for double that number above the seating area.

Nearby is the World War I Memorial known as The Carillon that soars 250 feet, and near its top, small and giant bells can be played by a professional carillioneer.

Last night, thousands heard The Richmond Concert Bank perform the 1812 Overture (complete with cannons booming) and listened to carillon bells. Then the fireworks ended the evening.

Meanwhile, about 2 miles north in an industrial area between Hermitage Road and I-95, about 4,000 swilled beer at Hardywood Brewery.

It's migration time for the Purple Martins. Their numbers have increased from 5,000 in 2009 to 27,000 last year.

They roost in 18 Bradford pear trees along a parking lot on 17th Street in Shockoe Bottom between Franklin and Grace Streets.

There are some interesting and varied activities going on in Richmond this week -- from a Bollywood fest at VMFA in conjunction with the Maharaja exhibit to a "going to the birds" event in Shockoe Bottom to view the mammoth flock of purple martins roosting in trees before continuing their migration to South America.

And it's also a First Friday week along the downtown Broad Street corridor.

There hasn't been a whole lot of publicity in the print media about this year's Watermelon Festival in Carytown, but in past years it has been described as the largest 1-day festival in the state -- attracting more than 100,000.

The 29th annual Watermelon Festival will be held this Sunday, August 5th from 10AM 'til 6PM along West Cary Street between The Boulevard and Thompson Streets.

The Richmond Jazz Festival 2012 kicks off tomorrow night (Friday August 10th) at The Hippodrome Theatre in Jackson Ward with Lonnie Liston Smith on stage. But the big events will be outdoors at Maymont on Saturday and Sunday.

Last year's festival attracted visitors from all over the country to the extraordinarily beautiful park in Richmond's near West End.

Click on names of performers as well as other pertinent captions at the top of the website:

And cross your fingers for good weather!

Turner Classic Movies' host Robert Osborne is interviewing Debbie Reynolds in a Nationwide big-screen 60th anniversary celebration of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN on Wednesday, August 22nd.

You can see and hear it in Richmond at nine cinema complexes.

Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds and a fabulous cast can be seen on the big screen at the following Richmond locations:

Imax Dome (the largest screen in Virginia) at The Science Museum of Virginia.

The Byrd Theater (2nd biggest screen in Richmond. And I bet a quarter that mighty Wurlitzer will rise from the pit and inspire the audience.)

Bow Tie Cinemas (also known as Movieland.)

Cinebistro (snack and drink while you watch) at Stony Point Fashion Park.

Regal 14 at Short Pump.

Regal Westhampton.

UA West Tower.

Carmike Cinemas.

Crossings Cinemas in Hopewell.
