Festivities begin around 5:15PM today (November 26th) in preparation for tree lighting at The Jefferson Hotel.

The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond's northside turned on its lights last Friday, November 23rd.

Downtown will light up about a week earlier this year. The switch will be pulled around 6PM on Friday, November 30th at James Center and lots of activities such as carriage rides, canal boat trips, lots of music and general frivolity will be provided.

I will be attending the Grand Illumination on Friday, as I always love to do. Richmond, after all, is the proud Tacky lights capital of the world :P

I will also love to attend the GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter. If I go, it will be my second time. This year will be my 3rd Grand Illumination

As Ed Sullivan used to say, this weekend "is going to be a really big shew" in Richmond.

And the weather man has agreed to cooperate (except maybe for the downtown ice rink (www.RVAOnIce.net) by promising mostly sunny skys and highs in the mid to upper 50's Friday and Saturday.

The Grand Illumination is Friday evening at 6PM at James Center (see details in an earlier posting.)

And the next day, Saturday December 1st, the huge Dominion Christmas Parade will march down Broad Street from The Science Museum in the 2500 block to The National Theatre at 7th Sreet.

I awoke to a surprise today.

Last year, New York Times writer Alastair Macaulay toured the Nation viewing about 25 major regional productions of THE NUTCRACKER and selected The Richmond Ballet as the best.

 

The lavish presentation will be on stage at the equally lavish Carpenter Theatre in downtown Richmond beginning December 14th.

The LINCOLN phenomenon continues tonight as Richmond's Landmark Theatre becomes the site of a forum featuring Spielberg, Goodwin and Kushner.  While the theatre has a seating capacity of 3,600, another 600 will view the event on a TV screen in the large ballroom beneath the auditorium.

The Monty Python bit of fun was musicalized about 5 years ago and mounted on a Broadway stage as  SPAMALOT.  It is being revived for a second National tour.

 

As it happens, The Carpenter Theatre in Richmond will be the site of the musical's opening -- and that is TONIGHT, January 11th.

 

The whole company was in Richmond yesterday for an orchestra run-thru (see Related Video in the accompanying RTD story.)

 

The show moves on to Philadelphia after its brief run in Richmond.

A gathering of LEGO afficionados will stop at The Greater Richmond Convention Center over the weekend of February 15, 16 and 17.   

 

Saturday, the 16th, is already sold out -- and the Convention Center holds a lot of people.

The Broadway musical BILLY ELLIOT, an elaborate adaptation of the movie, opens at 8PM tonight at Richmond's Landmark Theatre for a five performance run. 

 

It appears from the ticket site that tonight's performance is sold out, but there are 4 more shows between now and Sunday night.

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus opens an eleven performance schedule at The Richmond Coliseum on Wednesday, February 20th. The final performances will be on Sunday, February 24th. 

 

The circus train usually parks in the Norfolk Southern rail yard on the south side of the James River and the elephants and other animals walk across the 14th Street bridge and then along city streets to the Coliseum.

 

This Red Tour of the circus called 'Built to Amaze' will arrive in Richmond after an engagement in Philadelphia.

The Monument Avenue 10K is the 18th largest fully-timed race in the entire world, and this year the Richmond event will take place on Saturday, April 13th. 

 

23,000 have already registered.  More than 40,000 are expected to sign up.

Richmond (and the world) will get to see the second coming of Lincoln on the National Gographic channel Sunday evening February 17th in two showings -- 8PM and 10PM.

 

Like the Spielberg version, this one about the killing of the president was also filmed in Richmond.  Actor Billy Campbell portrays Mr. Lincoln. 

 

A special premier showing and discussion of the documentary will be held at Richmond CenterStage next Tuesday, February12th at 7PM.  Admission is free -- first come/first served.

We bought tickets to the Lego event months ago.  Really looking forward to it!

The Lego Kids Festival scheduled next weekend (Feb. 15, 16 and 17) at The Greater Richmond Convention Center is completely sold out.

 

People from all over the mid-Atlantic region have purchased tickets.  That should fill a lot of hotel rooms.

Tonight, Friday February 8th, The Richmond Ballet opens its production of SWAN LAKE at The Carpenter Theatre with the Richmond Symphony in the pit.

 

A pair of dancers from The Queensland Ballet in Austrailia will alternate dancing the lead roles with dancers from the Richmond Ballet.

 

Sets and costumes are on loan from The San Francisco Ballet.

 

Performances are tonight, two on Saturday and a final matinee on Sunday.

The TEDxRVA event planned for March 22nd has sold out.

 

If you're confused as to what it is all about, click the highlighted TEDxRVA in the story.

 

It is to be held at the Power Plant at Haxall Point where all the murals are located, although it may be inside the huge power plant.  As far as I know, the vast interior has not been used since Richmond on the James was constructed on the site about 5 years ago.

 

The power plant is directly across the Haxall Canal from the new Mexican restaurant in The Locks development.
