The TEDxRVA event planned for March 22nd has sold out.

If you're confused as to what it is all about, click the highlighted TEDxRVA in the story.

It is to be held at the Power Plant at Haxall Point where all the murals are located, although it may be inside the huge power plant.  As far as I know, the vast interior has not been used since Richmond on the James was constructed on the site about 5 years ago.

The power plant is directly across the Haxall Canal from the new Mexican restaurant in The Locks development.

From yesterday's RVANews:

Here are interior photos of the Power Plant before and after the building was stabalized:

I am sad to report that Burt died this week. A late comer to the computer world, he loved these forums and reveled in all his friends and followers. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, my friend.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of Burt's passing. He had been quite on here the last week or two so I had wondered if something had happened or if he just went on one of his many NYC to Richmond trips. I left Richmond years ago, but still kept informed about what was going on through his postings. I often chatted with him through direct messages. Really great guy and he'll be missed on these forums. RIP, Burt.

What?!?!?!  I was also wondering why he was silent the last few days.  Well, the boards will not be the same without him and he will be sorely missed.  Heck, we don't even know what he looked like (any way to post a photo?).  This is very sad news indeed.

Thanks for posting the photo - it's nice to put a face to a name. I'm very sorry for your loss and though this is a loss for all who knew him, we here on UP, should celebrate his life by keeping his spirit alive here on this board! May we do what Burt would want and be more enthusiastic about Richmond's growth just as he was - let's keep the posts going! Thanks again joanpone!

This is new.

Carytown is celebrating the new craft beer craze with the first ever Carytown Craft Beer Festival.

A new event for all of us to mark on calendars. I wonder if it will draw in as much as the Watermelon Fest?

The date is set for Sunday, April 14.

This year's Innsbrook After Hours schedule is partially revealed.

Some of the acts include The Band Perry (very big name now) and the Marshall Tucker Band (a good band from the 70s country scene, sadly both the main two brothers of the act have passed on since).

There was no mention on Richmond.com and I didn't see it online for The Times-Dispatch, thought may have missed it. I had forgot about it until I saw it in my Facebook feed, but the auto show is back this weekend at the convention center. I am curious to see the Tesla, 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year. It looks pretty sharp and has over 400 hp and is all electric I believe. To but I don't have 90k to spend.

Innsbrook After Hours' lineup just got a big name added.

THE BEACH BOYS (;)) perform for their 50th anniversary tour.

Also, maybe this was already a known scheduled performer, but Pat Benatar also plays the office park on August 28th. Pat Benatar apparently worked as a bank teller outside the River City before she began singing. She hated it.

I would just like to point out the explosion of new festival activity. These festivals have made their debut (or will make their debut) this year.

  • Bacon Fest
  • RVA Streets Alive!
  • Summer Moon Music Festival
  • Virginia Beer Live!
  • Fall Line Fest
  • Running of the Bulls (new to Richmond, at least)

and Richmond.com has just reported today that a new festival for Labor Day has been announced: the RVA Wake N' Sun Fest

TEDx, the popular creative conferences organized by locals and third party groups, is returning to Richmond -- twice.

Next week will be TedxGraceStreet, which, as you can guess, is an entire conference discussing the potential that lies for recently revived corridor.

And TedxRVA, the city's flagship event that had it's first conference earlier in March, will be returning again next spring.

Of course for me, the countdown to the next Folk Festival begins the Monday after the last Folk Festival, but for others, the countdown really begins with the (somewhat traditional now) grand unveiling of the Folk Fest poster.

Every year they grab a local artist to do a beautiful design. This one is no different.

This is such a great thing that happens every year.  It even appears to be a fairly inexpensive activity for families!  What a memorable way to spend some time together during the holidays!  Love it!
