Massive Riverfront Project

Do you people honestly think that a few bloggers talking about an article printed yesterday in a local paper is going to stop a 500 million dollar development from happening? I'm gonna feel stupid if I find out you guys were just joking about this.

Its more of a karma thing really. Talk about things before they happen make you think that someone will find out and it wont happen.

I call BS on this "bad karma" stuff.

Look, this is a major deal involving PUBLIC land that many people have publicly confirmed exists at least in conceptual form.

It's childish to think the people on this forum shouldn't be able to discuss it for fear of killing the idea.

If the project is right, an Internet forum isn't going to kill it, nor are stories in the GRBJ or GR Press. Last I heard this forum was about discussing urban development, not being blind boosters for a project we know nothing about.

In fact, I want to know when public officials are signing development confidentiality agreements which forbid them from keeping their constituencies informed about the future of a major portion of downtown.

the confidentialiy among the public officials may break this... You get a slowly moving force of citizens who deman what their elected officials are doing and this could tempt or even scare the developer away.. any thoughts?

I dont think we need that kind of pressure on our planning commission <_< Other areas though? definately.

In an event like this no pressure... I mean when something is so big why try to wreck it? Why try to get in the way? As far as I know the only elected officials that know about this is Heartwell - I'm gonna pull up my lawn chair, sip my RC, and watch the storm blow in. I'm gonna reiterate Dad - March Madness!

Fine, the topic is re-opened with some good points regarding our public officials. My decision had NOTHING to do with karma. It sounds like Shurlow has all her ducks in a row, so we won't run the risk of driving up prices artificially in the speculative market now anyway.

Maybe the best way to go is for us to lower our expectations so we won't be disappointed when we hear the final proposal.

For example, instead of anticipating a casino, we could hope for a bar that also happens to include a couple of slot machines. Or we could hope for a playground with some swings and a teeter-totter instead of an indoor water park, or an Oak Express instead of Ikea. Personally, I would be thrilled to see a little fun park with some paddle boats you can rent and ride on the Grand River.

:rofl::rofl:

I tried that, but I can't. Can anyone fathom what kind of development would entail "billions of dollars" and would be "not only good for Grand Rapids, but for the State of Michigan" as the Press is reporting? The largest casino complex in Las Vegas has yet to hit the $2 billion mark (as far as I know). And before you say "Toyota", there is no way a Toyota plant would go there. They are looking for a MASSIVE 160 acre area for a new plant, and also room for possible supplier satellite facilities.

I'm like Mark London on this one. I'm flummoxed. :silly:

Yah my idea of Toyota was way off, didn't realise the specs needed for such a plant. Who knows what "billions" can buy... Skyscrapers, canals, a HQ, apartment towers, more canals, a home team and a place to play, massive Chrisitan religious center, rocket launch pad, government installation, a small city within a city... Heartwell wants a combo, I watched his interview on 13 news, he may have inadvertanly just spoild the fun... Dad remember when I said I had a gut feeling something was comming done the road a couple months ago- Wow, what a gut?

With the number of jobs and amount of investment, I'm starting to think this project (or at least part of it) has something to do with Granholm. What do you guys think?

If thats the case, then let it come! THAT WOULD BE MUCH MORE HUGE TO GR to have a RESEARCH HUB for such a technology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is much better then some glorified mall!!!! GRDad, I hope your right, I hope your right.

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

I think that would definately make up for the loss of $14 million in BRT funding :P

I just can't find anything on-line that even comes close. I just don't see West Michigan being the tourist mecca yet to build a multi-BILLION dollar entertainment complex. In fact, just go ahead and do a search on google for "$2 billion development" and see what comes up. :whistling: You'll be surprised, and most fo the hits are talking about COUNTRIES giving donation to other COUNTRIES.

True... I just have this weird feeling its national bloggers association or something to that idea plus a lot more. Then you also have the setting, industrial... Why put something residential/commerical oriented in the middle of this area?
