TDOT Smartway

Does anybody know what's going on with the Memphis Smartway system? TDOT has installed some cameras along I-40 and I-55 on the approaches to the Mississippi River bridges, and there are a couple of non-functioning electronic message boards hanging over the roadway. Eventually, though, we're supposed to have cameras along the expressways all over the city and a couple dozen message boards.

Does anybody know the timetable to get the rest of the system going? Naturally, Nashville's whole system is operational and Knoxville's is nearing completion, if not done already. I can't find an update on the TDOT website.

I would think within the year at the very least. Funny thing is they are STILL installing cameras throughout the interstate network in Nashville. I can think of two or three that are going up along I-65 and I-24.

I remember them installing the message board just south of the revamp the ramp project almost 2 years ago! Strange to hear they aren't even operational yet. I think the TN 385 loop is supposed to be completed this year, so we'll need TDOT to start setting up cameras over there and who knows how long that'll take. Maybe TDOT is taking its sweet time because Memphis' traffic isn't too bad (except for in construction zones) compared to Nashville and maybe Knoxville. Even Desoto County got traffic cameras before Memphis.

It surprises me, since 250,000 people in the Memphis metro don't even live in Tennessee, and have nothing to do with TDOT.

Yeah it suprised me too but when I think about it, its not so unexpected. Don't forget even though Shelby County has less traffic, its still denser and has about 300,000 more people than Davidson (2nd largest county). WREG already has traffic cameras on top of the Hilton, Clark Tower, Time Warner building, and Baptist in NE Shelby County. Anyway, if there is a serious back up on a roadway, Fox, CBS, NBC, and ABC all have news choppers that go check it out. IMO the message boards will be very helpful but the traffic cameras are just a luxury.
