Trendy DT Bar/Pub?

Hey guys, this is my first post so please don't correct too harshly if I go about this the wrong way...

I was wondering if GR has the ability to support something along the lines of a trendy bar/pub (like something one would see in europe) geared more towards the 21-early early 30's. It seems to me that we need more variety in the night life of this city. Any thoughts?

I don't think we're ever harsh, are we? :D

Be more specific for those of us who've never crossed the Atlantic. What'd you have in mind?

Picture a bar that's colorful with new hip-hop/techno music, lava lamps, bean bags maybe, a disco light ball, flat screen tvs on walls. definitely more upperclass with a dress code, something like the bob but brighter, more colorful, more "funky"

Trendy.....

Oh yeah! I remember now. I was trendy once. But I'm over 50 now. Just give me a Guinness and a fine cigar and I'm happy.

Hey wait....Disco ball? Lava lamp? We had that stuff back when I was trendy!

Sign me up. I can picture something along the lines of BED in Miami. I don't know if it would be for the 21 crowd though. They seem to go where the beer is cheapest. If it's hip, trendy, somewhat exclusive due to the dress code the 21 crowd will not be there. It would be the place where the fashionable ladies want to go so they don't get hit on by the drunk college crowd. I know there is a huge 35-45 crowd that would dig a great trendy techno bar. Karma on the third floor of Tiki Bob's was a pretty nice place for that type of atmosphere but it is no more. Build it calsig2000 and they will come.

I don't know if I would set foot in a place like that, but is there really a market for this? I would imagine with all the college students around this would be a hang out.

allbusiness:

Welcome to you sir. but my gaelic stops there, aunty orpha decided on not teaching her nephew the old language when relatives back home decided English was much easier. :( Erin Go Braugh!

While it ain't my style, I wonder if there is a market for that in GR. While we certainly have a large young, college-age crowd, it seems like lots of them like to buy their dollar drafts of lawnmower beer at Flanigans and puke in their shoes.

A place like that looks to me like it'd be more expensive, and be most attractive to the "young professional": 25-30, white-collar, single, etc. Do we have a market for that? I don't know. :dontknow:

Last I had heard Cygnus was due (long overdue) to be remodeled with the intent of brining an upscale lounge atmosphere to a larger portion of the space. Their location is under utilized, but the setting can not be rivaled currently in GR.

I have a friend who proudly claims to be the first person kicked out of Cygnus  I guess that makes him a local celebrity.

Karma was a hot spot for 40 somethings looking to pick up 20 year old girls. Or a hotspot for 20 year old girls looking for guys with big boats. Take your pick.

.. just my opinion.

Ah, that's nothing. I've been escorted out of the Sears Tower.

One year we deicided that $7 was too much money to ride their elevator to the observation deck so we decided to see how much we could see for free from the office elevators.

Apparently that doesn't go over well at the Sears Tower.

Are you possibly describing something that has come to be known as an "ultralounge?" You will see these in Vegas, Miami (SOBE), Chicago, NYC, etc. They are very "swank," play kind-of disco, funky, upbeat music, and usually have dimmer, but somewhat funky lighting. They usually don't have a dance floor per se but dancing often breaks out later in the night. There are usually couches and low tables for lounging, kind of like a big living room (in fact there was a place in SOBE called 'living room') sometimes late in the night people will spontaneously start dancing on these low 'coffee' type tables. There may or may not be reserved seating, if there is it usually requires bottle service. Dress is definately club, the door guy likely will not let you in with sneakers (esp white), baseball hats, t-shirts, etc. Not much of a beer drinking place, likely nothing on tap, mostly mixed drinks.

This type of place would not cater to the college or 21-23 crowd, but mostly with the out of college moving up in the world through their 30's and perhaps early 40's. A few also in their 40's and 50's wishing they were in their 30's (oh oh, this may be me too soon :( )

The closest GR has ever come to this was the old Opus, if any of you remember that (before the building turned into cheezy Bobs). Oh good memories there for me :D ..unfortunately the place went downhill when they started letting hoodlums in and could not control it.

I would LOVE to see another place like this in GR, and I have a few friends who would I am sure become regulars if done right.
