"The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors signed off this week on a $372 million project to widen a 3.1-mile stretch of Richmond Highway between Jeff Todd Way and Sherwood Hall Lane.

The project aims to increase capacity along the busy stretch of roadway south of where Metro’s Yellow Line ends at Huntington by widening the roadway from four to six lanes and reversing the median for a future bus rapid transit system."

Cost of the Purple Line Light Rail entrance to the Red Line Station increases by $22.6M (20% increase)

Here is a rendering of the Purple Line entrance into the red line metro station.

I am honestly pleased the Purple Line is being built right and integrates nicely into the Metro system. (The way it was funded was a disaster. But I think the line itself is great).

DC Streetcar Extension to Benning Road Metro Station could be open and operating by 2026.

”On Tuesday, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) released the final design for a project that would not only extend and add five stops to the streetcar, but would also rehabilitate or replace three bridges and add streetscape and intersection improvements along Benning Road between Oklahoma and Central Avenues NE.

The agency expects to bring a contractor on board to begin working on utility relocations along the route next spring or summer, enabling full construction and delivery of the streetcar extension in 2026”

Im really ready for the streetcar to expand West which I think will be very possible soon with the K Street transit way. I’ve read before the Infrastructure Bill, that if they couldn’t get money for streetcar on K Street, they would do the utility work and make everything readily to add Streetcar.

With the newly passed infrastructure bill, I think K Street Streercar will Happen. Even if not, the transit way is needed.

Upzoning for a portion of Benning Road along the streetcar.

“The Office of Planning (OP) is taking another step to encourage development along the DC streetcar line.

On Tuesday, OP applied to rezone the south side of Benning Road NE between 16th Street (map) and Oklahoma Avenue NE (map). The map amendment would increase the density from moderate-density residential apartments and mixed-use development to medium-density mixed-use of 7-8 stories.”

Metro says riders are returning at higher rates than they anticipated.

Ridership has already surprised their conservatively-estimated projection of 28 million rides by nearly 40% through the first three quarters of the fiscal year, the transit agency said Monday.  Bus ridership has returned to about 60% of pre-pandemic levels, with about 290,000 rides per day on recent weekdays. Rail ridership is at about 37% of pre-pandemic numbers, with 230,000 rides on recent weekdays. Parking garage use has tripled in recent months, too.

The numbers bode well for the region’s economic recovery as tourism rebounds and more workers return to the office, but it is less welcome news for train and bus riders who are experiencing more crowded vehicles. Riders cited a noticeable uptick in crowding during peak periods once May started. And as ridership is rising, Metro continues to wrestle with train shortages as 60% of its fleet, the 7000-series trains, remained sidelined.

BRT with dedicated bus lanes in Arlington broke ground today between Pentagon and Crystal City adding to the current BRT line.

"Five new Metroway stations also will be added between Pentagon and Crystal City.“It’s more like a rail system. It’s just not on tracks, as opposed to operating in mixed traffic,” said Cristol."

The streetcar lanes could become DC’s first 24/7 dedicated Bus/Streetcar lane only. Pics from @MarkSussman on Twitter

This is exciting news to make DC’s Streetcar have a dedicated lane.

New Carrollton, MD was awarded $20.5 Million from the RAISE grant towards a new multi-modal hub that will be for Metro, Light Rail, Amtrak, Commuter Rail, and buses.

The hub is intended to create a “downtown” like area. The improvements to the station will include a new train hall for the existing MARC, Metrorail, and Amtrak service, incorporating connections to Metrobus, TheBus, and Greyhound bus services and the future Maryland Purple Line light rail. In addition, the project will bring new sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting, signalization, and traffic calming improvements to Garden City Drive to improve access to the station as well as the train hall plaza space. This will create a vibrant hub that is attractive for new commercial and residential development and will provide better connections between the transit options available at the station.

Good news for once.

The 16.2 Mile Long Purple Line Will open a year earlier (Fall 2026) than the most recent completion day.  The original completion date was 2022 so that still constitutes a net 4 year delay.

Revised Projected ridership is 65,000/day.

Can’t believe in addition to some early funding for studies last year the new governor is actually going to bat for the “SouthEnd Maryland Light Rail”
