Found this comment rather funny. How did she ever get into college if she doesn't know Hartford? It is a state capital! Don't all students have to learn states and capitals before entering high school?

well, being from Louisville, I can tell you that Hartford is totally off the radar here. In reality, Louisville and Hartford are quite similar, but I think Louisville is a bit more well known with the Louisville Slugger, KY Derby, whiskey, etc. That said, I seriously doubt that most people in Conn have heard of Frankfort, KY.

I had read a few years ago that they polled some (?) aged kids in Arizona and that 85% thought that New England was an island off the east coast. Not sure if it's true, but I did read that somewhere...

Every year you read horror stories about college kids and geography. My favorite was a UNC student who thought the state south of North Carolina was Atlanta.

When I lived in CA, at least three people I knew thought Connecticut was the capitol of the state of New England.

All I can say is sad. And no disrespect to Frankfort, KY but you can't compare Hartford to that city, we are waaaaaaaaaay too major.

I once met a girl -- while living in the deep South, of course -- who thought Rhode Island was that island off New York.

I gave her credit, actually. Close enough. And it would have been painful to explain the truth ...

One time, I was in Los Angeles on business. I was talking to a girl in a bar and she asked me where I was from. I said "Connecticut"

She asked "Is that in Orange County??"

I was shocked. "What?? Are you kidding? Its a state in New England. Right next door to New York."

She got defensive and said "Well, I'm not from around here...."

If you're outsie of New England and talking to someone who is not a college sports fan, tell them you went to UConn. Lots of folks think you are talking about Alaska and others have no idea.

Yeah, it's amazing how bad Americans are at the geography of our own country. In college I met one girl who thought Connecticut was in the midwest somewhere, she was from Cali. Another girl I met from Toronto never even heard of it, but she's a not American, so I guess she's excused.
