Trump says New Orleans tower to "definitely" go forward.

Saw this on another board. Apparently, Donald Trump was on Larry King Live last night. He was specifically asked about the New Orleans project. He said it will definitely go forward, and that the project is even more attractive now than before Katrina with the tax incentives. So, be on the lookout for Trump's building to rise 70 stories above the streets of New Orleans. I'm looking forward to it.

I did a little digging, and found the transcripts from the interview. Here's the part about the New Orleans project:

KING: Would you build in New Orleans?

TRUMP: Well I'm actually going to build a building in New Orleans. It's very interesting. Before -- two weeks before the hurricane, we announced that we're going to build a building. The economics of the building have actually gotten better, and the government is giving us great subsidies, which they weren't giving us prior to the hurricane, so (INAUDIBLE) actually do better and it's a really appropriate thing for them to do because they want people like myself to go down there and build.

KING: Condos?

TRUMP: So I'm actually doing a job. It will be condos.

KING: But don't you have some fear over the weather conditions...

TRUMP: I don't like it. Well look, the whole thing with the levees is ridiculous anyway because you're building a city under ground -- under water. I mean you have an ocean that's 15 feet higher than the city. So I don't like the concept of levees. The piece of land I have is substantially above the levees.

KING: And you would therefore have faith in the city?

TRUMP: Well look, you're getting tremendous...

KING: Must have... TRUMP: ... incentives now from the government, which frankly we didn't have before. You know New Orleans was a great place, had a great history.

KING: And you made the commitment before this...

TRUMP: I made a commitment before, and there were no subsidies. Now they want us to go forward, and they're giving us subsidies. The economics actually work out better now.

KING: That's a great story.

I'm not a big fan of Donald Trump, and the more I see of him, the more I think he's an idiot.

However, this tower would be tremendous. Building the tallest building in the city NOW and putting the Trump name on it would signify to even the biggest skeptic that New Orleans is coming back whether they like it or not.

is this all condos? mixed use? is there a gaming component to it? it's a fscinating - and probably very calculated - place for the trump brand to turn up...

It will be a "condotel." A building mixed with high end condo's and a hotel, and retail shops in first few floors of the building. At least that's all I've heard about the plans for the tower since it was proposed.

Trump has just announced that he is in a partnership to build a casino/condominium/hotel resort complex in Diamondhead, near Bay St. Louis. No idea yet on what it will look like. Seems as though he likes this area....

I'm getting a little nervous about his New Orleans development. It's been a while since we've heard anything about this project. Although in the TP last week in an article about the condo boom, they cited that it is going forward.

Isn't the building currently in pre-sales?

Its going to happen. It is on his website now, but I believe the floorplans are still being worked on. It has not gone into pre sales yet. Ill let you know when it does.

Cheers,

Derek

BTW I wrote my councilmember, Stacy Head, to voice my dissatisfaction with the highrise that is proposed on S. Peters and Girod Streets. I think it is out of scale for the area and remove even more warehouses. There are plenty of parking lots over by the Vantage Tower, so hopefully that is where the large towers can and will be built. Lord knows we don't need surface parking lots.

I'm one who believes that if you live in the warehouse district, tall buildings shouldn't bother you. It's part of living downtown. I hope that project doesn't get killed.
