I'd like to know where the Atlanta of the West is, where Miami of the North is, where Charleston of the Midwest is. It seems like the South is always taking a second seat to the other regions of the US. There is no reason for that, whatsoever.

LA = Atlanta of the West

? = Miami of the North

Charleston, Illinois = Charleston of the Midwest

:P

LA cannot be the Atlanta of the west. aside from having a different climate, setting, style of architecture, personality, it is 3 times the size of Atlanta and is more densely populated.

I would say that Portland would be the Charlotte of the west due to the light rail but I dont think that there is an Atlanta of the west. There is only one Atlanta.

If there is any city that is similar to Atlanta and west of Atlanta, it is Houston. They are almost the same size, are both sprawled out and both are very hot in the summer. The only noticeable difference is that Houston has a port and is flat. They both even have similar hip hop cultures.

^But both Houston and Atlanta are Southern. Just because Houston is west of Atlanta doesn't make it Western.

I said LA was the Atlanta of the West simply because both are sprawling out of control. That was about the only quality I could find that fit both Atlanta and a city out west.

Let's just end this silly discussion and say that when it comes down to it, every city is different and not entirely comparable, and if your city can really be compared to some other city in a fairly comprehensive way, then there is no originality to that at all! Of the cities on the list, why even doubt that of all the movies filmed in the south's urban environs, 60-80% come out of south FL with a shot over Biscayne Bay. I mean come on, who would put Charlotte or even Houston on the list, and what's worse is who would vote for them? I have not seen one movie with a shot of Charlotte in it, maybe there are some movies filmed there, I don't know.

Even in Jax there are movies and TV shows filmed on location somewhere in the metro :Devil's Advocate, Manchurian Candidate, GI Jane, Basic, Lonely Hearts (Jax made out to look like 1920s NYC), Tigerland, Sunshine State, The Babysitter's Seduction, Cold Case show, Road Raiders, Intimate Strangers, etc.

However in no way should Jax be on the list, only MIA< ATL< NO< and Dallas/DC if you count them in the south.

Shallow Hal (Jack Black, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jason Alexander) was completely centered on Charlotte. ;)

If you want, I guess you could add Kings of Comedy to that list. Also some scenes in Eddie were filmed in the Coliseum.

Wilmington is by far the Hollywood of the south. It's already considered the hollywood of the east. Film production there is huge!

I would put Wilmington under Orlando and Miami, because there are many more production jobs available there. Wilmington definitely deserves consideration (as you'll notice I gave it earlier), but it is not quite at the level of the Florida market yet. And as far as the television market goes, Atlanta certainly ranks very high with CNN, FOX Sports, and Turner Broadcasting, to name a few. ;)

Oh yeah. And I also forgot that the glitzy and glamorous place isn't really Wilmington, it's Wrightsville Beach.

Bevery Hills, Hollywood...same metro area, practically extensions of each other. My point still remains.

Beverly Hills and Hollywood are 2 seperate cities, thats the whole point. doesnt matter if they are in the same metro area. Matthews and East Charlotte, same metro....so what?

I dont know whats funny about Wilmington not being glitzy, neither is Hollywood. So I guess you could say they are similar on that point. Yes, there are very wealthy people in and around Hollywood, way more than Wilmington of course. But what does that have to do with the movie productions.

Out of that list I would vote for Miami, but my overall choice would be Wilmington NC, as someone mentioned earlier its already considered the Hollywood of the east

Technically speaking, Hollywood isn't its own city, it's a district of Los Angeles. And you can take out what I said about "glitzy" and "glamorous" (although it's merely an opinion that Hollywood isn't glitzy and glamorous) and it still doesn't detract from the fact that it is a destination for celebrities (as well as tourists) for various reasons apart from simply making films. This is something that is not true of Wilmington, for better or for worse--that was my only point. Miami shares more of a commonality with Hollywood in this regard to a far greater degree than Wilmington. So taking that aspect into account, along with the long list of movies and shows that have been shot/produced in Miami, it is the obvious winner here IMO.

Actually, I think the "glitz and glamor" factor has more to do with the number and calibur of celebrities that can be seen in a place on any given day. After all, the celebrities themselves are really the ones that determine whats glitzy and glamorous. Therefore, I thinks Krazeeboi's point should still stand :)
