Good work there, NashVol. I'd been planning on figuring this out, and now it's already done! One thing I noticed is that the Census Bureau actually reduced their estimates of 2004 Tennessee population by about 7,000 before coming up with the 2005 estimates. They even reduced the 2004 population estimate of Davidson County (which I have thought was grossly understated) by about a 1,000. The whole process amazes me.

Well I'm pretty bored, so I might do Metropolitan & Micropolitan with county populations included.

Very informative stuff! Thanks! You must of had a good deal of time on your hands.

I love statistics and numerical rankings, in both sports and population figures, so it's really easy for me.

It took me about 45-60 minutes to do that.

It'll be interesting to see next year how Katrina affected the population of the Gulf Coast, as well as any upticks in population in Houston, Baton Rouge, Atlanta, and Memphis. I've read that DeSoto County attracted a number of new residents from the MS coast, and at some point Shelby County had 13,000 evacuees. I wonder how many stayed.

That would be interesting to see. Perhaps Memphis will jump closer to Nashville in MSA population.

Memphis is following Nashville and slowly creeping up the ranks of largest metro areas in the nation.

Actually, Memphis has most likely fallen behind in metro ranks since for decades it's only grown at the national average of 12% or so.

And it was about 10 yr. ago that Nashville's metro leapfrogged Memphis'.

I suspect though that DeSoto has been a big beneficiary of MS hurricane relocation, so who knows.

^Could you provide a source/link. Checking census.gov, the 2005 numbers for Davidson are 575,261--the same as the previous posts. I didn't check Knoxville's CSA though, since Davidson didn't check out. It may be that census.gov just hasn't updated yet.

I'll never understand why Chattanooga doesn't have the Dalton, GA MSA in its CMA. It is closer in distance than Murfreesboro to Nashville and Morristown to Knoxville. Its literally like a 25 min. drive apart. Dalton, GA has a MSA population of 131,701, so if you add that in, Chattanooga grows to 783,190. If anything, Dalton should be added and Athens removed.
