Huntsville Metro Population Growth

I thnk the main problem that the region is having, particularly Madison County and Morgan County, is that everyone is still wanting to embrace that small town mentality and feel. People like the idea of working in a really hi-tech industrial job and then driving out to their country home, or at least their big house in the suburbs. The bad thing about that is, that's what the Virginians want when they move here for BRAC, so, it's not likely they'll be living in downtown, which, we all know, leads to more sprawl.

Like I said, if we start thinking like we're a populated area, we can get more done, but, only if we stop believing we can't do it just because we're "small and rural".

We grew 10% between 2000 and 2006, a gain of approximately 35,000 residents. Yes and Madison County has done a horrible job of adapting to growth. How can the 3rd most populous county and 2nd in median income (next to shelby) in the state have no sewer system whatesover!

we are seeing that change especially in north Madison county where private companies are installing sewer systems. Everyone realizes that septic tanks are not the way to go for much longer. Most commercial development won't occur unless a sewer system is in the plan. So in some ways that limitation has kept growth slower than it may have been, which is probably a good thing.

An article in the Decatur Daily today shows a lot of promise for Decatur's future growth. A survery reports that 60% of employers plan to hire new employees and none plan to reduce payroles. This puts Decatur in 5th place in their survey. To read more on this, click the link below to where I posted the summary in the "Decatur Economic Expansion" thread.

I don't think the tags are running on the old system anymore. With the new tags you can't even tell what county a person is from now. That can be a good thing seeing that no one automatically knows where your're from in the state. I kind of liked the ability to tell what county a person was from though. Maybe we can do like Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi does with their tags and have the names of the county on the bottom of the tag.

I think you're talking about the American flag plates that are so popular. I saw an article a couple of months ago that stated that this design was never intended to replace the county-designated tags and its popularity was a big surprise. I think it said there are something like 50,000 of them in Madison County alone. It's a free option, and many seem to like the design (I have three of them).

I believe the "Stars Fell on Alabama" will be replaced starting in January, thank goodness. Hopefully the new standard plate will be a lot more attractive.

Have you also noticed that we've gone to silkscreening the letters and numbers, which makes the plate look much neater than the raised letters of the past?

Today's the day every year that the county population estimates for the previous year are released by the Census Bureau. While these aren't official numbers like the Census taken every decade, they give a good idea of how fast (or slow) an area is growing. The city populations will be released in June. They might be interesting, too: did Huntsville break 170,000? Did Madison hit 40,000? Too bad fast-growing areas like Meridianville, Monrovia, and Moores Mill aren't incorporated, they would be fun to watch too.

Here they are, the estimates for the Huntsville-Decatur region:

In the MSA:

Madison: 312,734 (2006- 306,277)- a change of 6,457- slightly smaller than 2005-2006

Limestone: 73,898 (2006- 71,777)- a change of 2,121- larger than 2005-2006

MSA Population: 386,632 (2006- 378,054)- a change of 8,578

In the CSA (and/or the Decatur MSA):

Morgan: 115,050 (2006- 114,099)- a change of 951- smaller than 2005-2006

Lawrence: 34,229 (2006- 33,936)- a change of 303- larger than 2006-2006 (it lost population then)

Decatur MSA: 149,279 (2006- 148,035)- a change of 1,254

CSA population: 535,911 (2006: 526,089)- a change of 9,832

The region, or the "2010 CSA":

Marshall: 87,622 (2006- 86,422)- a change of 1,222- smaller than 2005-2006

Jackson: 53,030 (2006- 53,052)- a change of -22, smaller than 2005-2006

Lincoln, TN: 32,731 (2006-32,445)- a change of 286- slightly smaller than 2005-2006

Regional population: 709,316 (2006: 698,008)- a change of 11,308

More Tidbits:

Madison County is the 6th fastest growing county in Alabama percentage-wise, but #1 in numbers again.

Limestone is the 2nd fastest growing county in Alabama (2006-07) behind St. Clair and before Shelby.

Well, "anonymous," like I said over at SSP, with school work, I use what little time I have to update the blog and map, with no time to spare posting over on the forums. This week is spring break, of course, so I have a little more time.

Marshall County's getting close; it's at 18% as of 2004, according to the US Department of Labor. Jackson's still a long shot at 13%, but with BRAC coming in and land prices getting so high in Madison County, that will only grow. Lincoln's probably passed the 25% threshold, but Tennessee's recent data doesn't show interstate commuters. And with Giles County- besides Ardmore, it really isn't drawing commuters.

Good job and to think I just criticized you on your blog for not posting on here and Skyscraper anymore. So you really think Marshall and Jackson will be added as a CSA. I think Lincoln county will be added even to the MSA since more than 20% of their counties already commute to Huntsville, but neither Marshall, Jackson or Giles, TN are close to the percentage of Lincoln County.

I'm finding this very weird and confusing. The current estimates are saying that the 06 estimated population of MorgCo was 114,000. While the 06 estimations said that there were 115,000. The current estimates are saying that the current population of MorgCo has fewer people than the estimated population in 06, yet the county has still grown...
