The real construction for the hotel is about to begin. Blasting the large amounts of earth away begins Tuesday, and it’s going to be very interesting for those kids going to the early college next year lol.

 

The second entrance is looking really nice too, and it’ll look really impressive once they get rid of the scrubby vegetation in front of PORTAL.

Wholly cow!  So UNCC was the 2nd largest University by undergrad enrollment.  Anyone think there’s a chance it could grow to the first largest by undergrad enrollment in the next few years?  What’s fueling its enrollment growth?

Earlier this year (02/11/2019), Ken Elkins at CBJ wrote a story entitled "What's driving UNC Charlotte's record-setting growth?"  According to the CBJ analysis, keys to the growth of UNC Charlotte include:

• the LYNX Blue Line extension, which Chancellor Philip Dubois calls "the most transformational project in UNC Charlotte's history, because it gives students, alumni and the community easy access to the university."
• the 5-year old PORTAL Industry-University Research Partnership Hub, which supports entrepreneurship and collaboration with private industry research partners and, in turn, trains potential future employees who are earning degrees from UNC Charlotte.
• construction of an $86 Million Marriot Hotel and Conference Center, with a planned opening in March 2021, which is expected to help the University attract conferences and other academic / sports events.

According to Chancellor Philip Dubois, the enrollment goal is 35,000 by 2025.  However, Dubois said the University may have to boost that goal.  "UNC Charlotte's  on a roll, with enrollment at the University topping 29,700 during the fall semester, an all-time high for the school that was founded in 1949." ...  “We’re talking about it,” Dubois says.   "A study found the maximum number of students UNC Charlotte could handle is 40,000 with the amount of land it owns."

The real answer to UNCC enrollment growth is transfers from Community Colleges.  UNCC has the highest, by far, inbound transfer rates from C.C's, because admission standards to those transfers are significantly lower than Chapel Hill or N.C. State.

Enrollment growth is limited by enrollment growth funding which is allocated by the legislature — UNCC got zero enrollment growth funding last year (despite an additional 1,000(?) students. In the current political climate there will be no growth if there is no money (tuition goes to the general fund, not to the university).

I appreciate what Phil has done here at the University, however, I'm excited about the future and taking this place to the next level. There has been a complete overhaul in the athletic department and is on the complete upswing. I want the new chancellor to be visionary and do what's best for the University and city of Charlotte (to up our game academically, marketing/branding, etc). Companies looking to relocate look at this stuff (future talent pool). It's a reciprocal relationship. The city needs to embrace this university to be the best it can be and vice versa.

Doesn’t the school still have 100+ undeveloped acres on the other side of Mallard Creek Church Road?

Yes the school has a large block of land zoned for institutional land use across mallard creek church rd. The only problem is there is a house and a small apartment complex that both (from what I've heard) are refusing to sell out or want a ridiculous price and without those 2 peices it would be hard to connect that side of campus to the current

Keep in mind that a lot of that land is flood plain.

I’m pretty sure that apartment complex is on land the school previously owned and sold. I guess they have no intention of using majority of it since it is on a flood plain.

Lots of site work for the on campus Marriott hotel by the JW Clay station one of the most transit accessible hotels outside of uptown.    This hotel will do great for sure.
