State Prepares To Return Genius Statue To Capitol

March 28, 2006

Associated Press The Genius of Connecticut will soon return.

The State Bond Commission is expected Friday to approve $300,000 to restore the statue to the state Capitol's golden dome, Gov. M. Jodi Rell and state Rep. Michael Cardin, D-Tolland, announced Monday.

The statue of the Genius was originally placed atop the dome when the building was constructed in Hartford in 1878. It was damaged during the 1938 hurricane and removed. The statue's metal was melted and donated to the war effort. A plaster model can be found on the first floor of the Capitol.

Cardin and preservationists want to recast that model.

"The restoration of our Capitol building started 20 years ago and now we can go forward and complete the effort," said Cardin, a social studies teacher and history buff.
