Yes, Greenville has an excellent economic Development Department that works very successfully with the private sector.

The City of Greenville is also member of the Upstate Alliance, which is make up of several upstate counties along with the cities of Greenville, Spartanburg and Greer. This is a public/private economic development organization.

Cities that invest in their own economic development are more often than not the cities that are thriving.

Thanks, crescentmoon, and (a belated) welcome to Urban Planet!!

For anybody interested in learning more about the fronts on which Greenville is engaged for Economic Development, here are a couple of other links:

Lots of good information on these sites.

Each of these is a great organization dedicated to the present and future of the Greenville region. I suggest getting to know the good people at the Chamber. They are on top of everything happening and can help find any factual information you need, not to mention help with serious business tips and networking.

More jobs being lost. FULL STORY.

This was just a matter of time. I had hoped they'd convert to manufacturing plasma systems, but that doesn't look to be the case.

From what I understand, the plant is supposed to stay open with around 20 employees or so. They will be working on touch screens.

The way it was explained to me is that they are working on something else to go into production there in the next few years or so. Not television related, but more along the touch screen lines.

I heard today from a friend that Cytec Industries has approved a 100 million dollar capital expansion of the facility here in Greenville for 2007. To be quite honest, I didn't know who or what Cytec was and didn't know they had a large operation here. I looked up their website, and below is the link to their locations. My friend told me there would be additional jobs, though he wasn't sure how many (and with a 100 million expansion happening), I would think it could be a good number. I don't know anymore....maybe some of you know and can fill us in. Good news.

In today's Journal, it mentions this item, it may be the same thing as the Cytec project , or something different.

Project Frontier, an as-yet-to-be-named investment in the county got backing from council. The council approved a Fee in Lieu of Taxes (FILOT) for the project. It will be in one or more multi-county industrial parks.

Interesting...... Wonder if this is Cytec?

Hmm. Well, I'm assuming it's not ICAR related, althought we've heard a lot about it recently expecting something big. I would think that they would not hold it downtown if it were involved at the campus. Perhaps it is something downtown OR just on undeveloped land somewhere-- just not related to ICAR-- and therefore have no proper place to announce this. Who knows!

We sure could use a big white collar tenant downtown to eat up some of the office space thats supposed to be built.

Fingers crossed... Engineering....

Hopefully none of the office space currently available or going to be built would be big enough or offer them enough space. :) Therefore they'd to bring their own iconic skyscaper... ;)

Sanford's presence really interests me. What is this? Has any no-name incentive deal been passed recently?

Going out on a limb and HOPING that South Financial is changing their minds about the campus idea and refining their original plans. Making the location downtown and adding more jobs to their original announcement.

I'm guessing it is not as large as BMW, but probably a fair-sized company along I-85. In case you hadn't noticed, Sanford usually doesn't make an appearance for any new downtown Greenville developments - even as nice as The Peacock Hotel & Spa will be for the state. My guess is that this could be the new company gsupstate hinted at awhile back, possibly bringing 400 new jobs along I-85. Who knows, but it certainly sounds positive.

I didn't check one of my e-mail accounts until now, and I have the same invitation from GADC. It is very formal for such announcements, and says it will be held in the ballroom, with a "light reception to follow."

Here is the text from the invitation:
