Greater Greenville Economic Developments

I didn't follow the Dunkin story that well, but I know one of their largest franchise operators planned to move their corp headquarters from New York and along with that, build a bakery / distribution center for the Southeast region. I would assume this could employ the 200 to 250 number. Can't remember all the details. :dontknow: Anybody in TR smelled the aroma of fresh donuts baking?

Greer's first new DD has been open for a few weeks now as well. The one on Laurens Road in Greenville is coming along very well these days. Anyone know where they plan to locate in downtown Greenville?

We may hear something regarding "Project Apple" by the end of the week...

GreenvilleOnline.com says "in November," so either way this is great news. $50 Million and 200 new full-time jobs will be another welcome addition to our metro area. :)

(TR) Mayor Roy Reynolds said "Project Apple" involves a company that plans to move its North American headquarters to the city. He said the project "is going to impact the whole area."

So then, we have several projects in a state of flux. Does anyone have clues on any of them?

Project Apple - Corp office and 200 plus jobs for TR.

Project Elf - Corp office and 300 plus jobs.

Project Skyline - Over 2 billion and multi part.

And then Rolls Royce has a project code name....not sure what it is.

This is a nice addition of jobs.....GHS will hire around 565 additional positions for the new Patewood and Greer hospitals. Of course, along with these new jobs, comes a rate hike to pay for the jobs.

That sounds like a good guess. I don't have any numbers to prove it is true, however there certainly are quite a few engineering hubs across the Upstate region. It is nice to see so many global engineering companies operating right here in Greenville. It has been one of our economic strengths over the years and appears to be gaining even greater strength as time goes by. :shades:

While I've heard that a good bit, I haven't had anyone confirm that as the case with concrete numbers.

Here's what I pulled from CLARITAS with 2006 data...

Top Ten CSAs* for engineers, scientists, and computer professionals

as a percentage of total workforce

1. San Francisco - 3.42%

2. Denver - 3.24%

3. Washington DC - 3.13%

4. Hartford - 2.94%

5. Raleigh - 2.91%

6. Houston - 2.84%

7. Boston - 2.77%

8. Seattle - 2.66%

9. Dallas - 2.63%

10. Greenville - 2.6%

* with a population of at least one million

Thats a good stat to know. This reinforces the Upstate part of this topic that we were discussing before

Interesting article about the looming workforce issue.....not enough skilled people to fill jobs. With baby boomers soon reaching retirement age, people will be leaving the workforce in large numbers. With fewer people to replace these who will retire, education and skills are critical. The dynamics of the workplace are sure to change in the next several years.

I generally have a respect for Sanford's approach to finances for anything in this state He usually has an unbiased approach to most things, and he is usually right on the money with regards to watching out for the taxpayers dollar. I agree, however, that in this case it would have been worth the money up front even if only as a sign of goodwill towards Lockheed. This is one instance where we are fortunate that the state house has the final say.

Greenville based JHM Hotels continues to expand into large markets, with the recent purchase of a property in Chicago's West Loop area and plans for a future hotel on the spot. JHM's growth continues to be agressive....a great corporate headquarters citizen for Greenville and possible contender for a future downtown headquarters. :)

This is great to see. A local investor is helping start-up a local "angel investor" team to help local entrepreneurs bring their business ideas to reality. With the amount of local start-ups lately (Zipit, the new tire company, a couple of new medical device companies, etc), this looks like the right thing at the right time. Greenville is fresh with new ideas.

An article on the growth of BB&T's mortgage loan service center. Per this article, this division of BB&T is based in Greenville. I never knew that. :dontknow: Is it based in one of the downtown BB&T buildings? Seems this would employ a good number of white collar jobs.

It's based in the building across from Heritage Green.
