BMW's plant expansion has hired 1,000 construction workers and will employ 500 permanent workers upon completion. Photo gallery of new plant can be found here: http://www.greenvilleonline.com/apps/pbcs....Params=Itemnr=1 while news article can be found here: http://www.gsabusiness.com/news/27983-bmw-...w-assembly-shop

BMW is different than most automotive plants in that they only build vehicles that are ordered from dealerships so the number of jobs that will be created at the new plant is dependent on how the automotive industry is doing worldwide. Once that improves along with the rest of the economy later this year, we should see those jobs come in. :)

Greenvillians sure must love ice cream! Baskin Robbins is looking to franchise up to 30 new locations in the Greenville / Spartanburg area.

http://news.prnewswire.com/DisplayReleaseC...0983&EDATE=

I assumed Baskin Robbins was pulling back in this market due to the local push by Brusters, as well as the premium chains Cold Stone, Marble Slab, Maggie Moos, etc. I remember when I first moved here, there were several BR's and they've dwindled to just a few. Apparently they are about to re-enter the market in a big way.

Interesting. I wonder if it has anything to do with Dunkin' Donuts expansion in this market? :dontknow:

These are temporary jobs but still nice to see during the recession. From CoStar:

The U.S. Census Bureau plans to bring more than 1,000 jobs to Greenville, SC, with a 6,825-square-foot lease at 850 S. Pleasantburg Drive. Built in 1998, the three-story, 35,370-square-foot office building is in the South Pleasantburg submarket. The Census Bureau plans to employ 1,000 field surveyors and 60 on-site workers at the new location, beginning in September. Kitty Allen, CCIM, of Colliers Keenan represented the landlord, Ramsay-Warne.

It doesn't appear that this has been posted so I'll add in the link to the article. Another automotive company has shortlisted the upstate for possible expansion. The company is looking to expand it's US operations (headquarters, R&D, manufacturing, etc.).

This might be the wrong thread for this, but here goes.

On Sunday there was an article in the Gville News about GHS selling all of it's medical office buildings and leasing them back.

Assuming this goes through, would this mean that the local governments will receive a mini-windfall of new property taxes. As a non-profit, a hospital normally would not pay property taxes, but the REIT that would buy these buildings would.

The purchase prices have not been disclosed but there is 900,000 sq.ft total involved. At a modest value of $110 a foot that would be about $100mm. I think all of these buildings are in the city limts too. That would be a nice chuck of taxes to spend on something.

Does anyone see any flaws in my logic or have any info. to share ??

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that, however it sure would be nice. If it's true, we could certainly use the cash flow for projects like the Sqamp Rabbit Trail that would benefit all residents and the quality of life.

Has anyone posted about Carbon Motors yet? I heard about this from some family who lives in Connersville, IN, one of the other potential sites that Carbon Motors is considering.

http://www.carbonmotors.com/blog/24/Lets-T...-South-Carolina

Apparently they will be making their decision in the next few days. And it's narrowed down to two possible locations: the upstate and connersville, in.

Anyone know any more info?

We have discussed Carbon Motors here, but not recently. I think we are all thrilled at the prospect of having them in Greenville. I am glad to hear that we are supposedly in their top two. I really feel that our metro area has the most to offer them - growing knowledge-based automotive cluster, great corporate environment, low cost of living, and high quality of life.

Not that this will help us or anything, but it feels like Greenville is sort of "due" for an announcement like this. We have had a lot of close calls over the past few years with Rolls Royce, Audi, and the like. Even the Point Project that fell through comes to mind ( ). Just going off the numbers, it seems like CM would be along the lines of BMW in terms of impact. Is this a fair statement? Anyone know much about Cornersville (I've never heard of it)? It seems like Gville would be perfect for something like this with ICAR, Donaldson, BMW, I-85, and the Charleston Port a few hours away; but then I thought that about Rolls Royce and Audi too...

BTW, Speaking of the Donaldson Center, there was an article in the paper or somewhere the other day that they will be reopening their second runway for the first time in like 30 years. They said it will open a lot of new space in the complex for development and recruitment. Hopefully this will attract some good investment in the near future!

Carbon Motors is not as high profile as BMW, simply because of BMW's worldwide reputation, but in terms of impact I think Carbon Motors might be bigger than BMW. They will build advanced police cars, and are forecasting 10,000 jobs for the area they decide upon. I know that estimates can be wrong, but it goes both ways (e.g., BMW underestimated the number of jobs it would create in Greenville). BMW employs around 4,000 or 5,000 in Greer, yes?

With any of these huge companies, the jobs created in the supply network are often quite significant too (I think this would surely be the case with Carbon Motors).
