Greenville County to receive $91,354,041.70 immediately in Coronavirus funding. They are the only government entity in the state to receive this funding. The money will be used for:

  • cities

  • small businesses 

  • special purpose districts (fire and sewer departments)

  • library system

  • arena district (Bon Secours Wellness Center)

  • homeless population

  • housing assistance agencies

  • mental health and drug abuse agencies, and

  • public transportation

To be clear: Greenville County was the only county in the state to meet the population threshold to apply directly to the Federal government for the funds. Others presumably have to go through the state for their piece of the pie.

The new F-16s are being assembled at Lockheed’s new facility in Greenville, South Carolina, which opened in April 2019. The contracting mechanism used by the Pentagon “will facilitate faster contract awards and greater pricing clarity for our foreign military partners,” Brian Brackens, an Air Force spokesman, said in a statement to Bloomberg News before the contract announcement.

I'm not as close to this business sector as in the past, but here are my impressions:

   1.  The additional data and infrastructure is a good thing for the area.  Not an immediate benefit, but others may indirectly build on it in the future; citing its presence as a reason to proceed here with similar projects.

   2.  It's surprising that there is such a market, with the prevalence of Amazon and Azure cloud services, as well as the current presence of Immedion.   I'm guessing redundancy / backup for the Atlanta / Alabama / Chattanooga market would be the biggest usage.

Using a DC in ATL, the area has become less of a no-brainer.  Weather, construction, and civil unrest have become greater security threats in ATL area over time.   I see GVL as a welcome alternative.

In August, Greenville had the lowest DOM (48 days) in 23 months, when it hit an all-time low of 45. Spartanburg hit a 15-year low for DOM of 41, selling faster than Greenville homes for only the second time. Western Upstate DOM was 76, decreasing 20 percent since July. “WHEREAS, pursuant to the FILOT Act, and in order to induce investment in the County, the County did previously enter into an Inducement Agreement dated October 20, 2020 (the “Inducement Agreement”) with Project Spruce, a _____________ corporation (together with any successor to be referred to herein as the “Company”) (which was known to the County at the time as “Project Spruce”), with respect to the acquisition, construction, and installation of land, buildings, improvements, fixtures, machinery, equipment, furnishings and other real and/or tangible personal property to constitute a new corporate office facility in the County (collectively, the “Project”); and
WHEREAS, the Company has represented that the Project will involve an investment of approximately $30,000,000 in non-tax exempt property in the County and the expected creation of approximately 225 new, full-time jobs at the Project, all within the Investment Period (as such term is defined in the hereinafter defined Fee Agreement.”

Yep. Maybe it’s them. Not sure why they would construct a new building instead of taking up current available office space downtown though. Maybe they don’t wanna pay rent. Who knows. That’s what Southern First is doing anyways.
