New Grand Terminal - An Idea/Vision

:offtopic: It's not so awesome to be in the front cab as an engineer if the vehicle struck climbs the cab when it happens. Now add in the mental anguish to piloting crew if they hit something with people in it. They can't stop on dime; all they can do is blast the horn and watch it happen. That has to be very helpless feeling as it plays out. Someone is going to get completely obliterated while you're at the controls, and there is nothing you can do about it. :offtopic:

Damn man... didn't think about the humanity part, just the: "flying through a brickwall, couple abandoned trucks, a few abandoned buildings..." Dont want folks to get hurt. :)

This evening in an article I read in the December 2005 issue of MassTransit it states that new ITP Station would house a new Amtrak station (provided approvals/fundings are granted). A quote in the article from The Rapid Executive Director/CEO Peter Varga:

"Part of the other design is that the Amtrak station would be relocated over here

$50,000 for AMTRAK Station is just a minor update. There are still plans to build a new station on south end of Rapid property.

Thanks for the update  I was getting worried that building onto or near the Rapid Station had fallen through.

I recently saw the Kalamazoo train station (historic brick Romanesque type thing) and they added a bus terminal out front. What a great, sensitive addition. Brick arches for days...they have shown up their neighbors to the North, big time. Anyone have photos?

Now if we could connect The Rapid Station in Grand Rapids with this addition in Kalamazoo. :whistling:

I suppose that's subjective...........I would say, where the heck did that beautiful train station go? I drove by this thing a few weeks ago and was quite saddened by it. Somewhere behind all of those canopies lies the station.

Are the materials of this new addition compatible with the original building?, I'd say yes. Did this new "addition" do justice to the original architecture?, I'd say no way.

I was looking at the area on Google Earth and saw that the nearest railroad tracks are more than a block away to the south. If Amtrak wanted to build a new station on the Rapid property wouldn't the rail road tracks have to be moved northward? A lot of buildings would have to be demoed to make room for realigning the tracks which would be a major problem.

I drew up a little diagram in the thread that actually discussed the Amtrak station relocation:

The one option only removes one building, and not a very significant one at that. Just basically a warehouse. The other removes nothing.

i remember hearing a while ago that they were staring on a midwestern high speed train network of some kind.

anyone have any info?

This is all second hand info, but from reliable sources in my opinion.

There is a guy developing a bunch of new condos in New Buffalo. They are being pitched in Chicago as a 53 minute train ride into downtown. He wants to build a new train station in New Buffalo but is being held up by the ADA law set to expire in 2010 and being unable to define how to build the new station. The condos are being built and occupied right now and the tax base in New Buffalo is exploding. Add in the new casino that is being built there and this might be your Midwestern high speed rail that you are hearing about.

If you look at the "Michigan Services" PDF file located at http://amtrak.com you will see a little blurb at the bottome of the page talking about a new station in New Buffalo. I guess the new station will serve only the I-94 corridor lines from Kalamazoo and will no longer be a stop on the Grand Rapids <-> Chicago route.

"The New Buffalo Station will be relocated to 225 North Whittaker St., New Buffalo, MI at a date to be announced. When the move is completed, Trains 354, 355, 364, and 365"
[trains along I-94 corridor]
"will provide service to/from New Buffalo. Trains 370 and 371"
[trains for Grand Rapids <-> Chicago]
"will not stop. Please consult Amtrak for effective dates"
