I've seen people with hardharts walking around, but no visible changes yet. The first order of business will be finishing what never was finished - cleaning out some of the upper floors. Some of the upper floors were never completely cleaned out...the walls were just sort of pushed into a big pile in the center of the floor and left there.

All the asbestos was removed back in '02 and '03. All of the floors were gutted (hence the current transparent nature of the building), but the debris from the top 10 floors or so was never removed.

so there is just crap sitting all over the top 10 floors?

The MEGA board also approved in Southeast Michigan:...

A $6.8 million SBT credit to help restore the Fort Shelby Hotel in Detroit. According to state documents, Birmingham-based MCP Development L.L.C. plans a $68.9 million project that includes redeveloping the first 10 floors of the building as a 204-room Doubletree Guest Suites hotel that will feature a 38,000-square-foot conference center.

An email update on the Book Caddy Residences I received today after a request for info on their website a few weeks back. I'd be happy to forward along the attachments to anyone as well:

Thank you for your interest in the Westin Book-Cadillac Detroit Residences. As the most historic and luxurious address in the city of Detroit, the Book-Cadillac will offer four-star Westin hotel amenities, a prime Downtown location, and incomparable views of the Detroit International Riverfront and city skyline.

Due to the incredible demand for the residences, Esquire Properties (www.EsquireSales.com) will offer a one-day, pre-grand opening opportunity for buyers to purchase a residence at the Book-Cadillac. The event will take place at the Detroit Athletic Club on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at 11:00 AM. This selection phase will allow you to choose a condominium before the grand opening selling period on December 2, 2006, as well as entitle you to our best pre-release pricing. Residences will start from $280,000 during this period. We anticipate opening a Welcome Center in December with prices starting at $320,000. All deposits (5% of purchase price) will be held in escrow with our title company.

Condominiums will range in size from 950 square feet for a one bedroom to 1500 square feet for a two bedroom. Six penthouse units are also available ranging from 2300 square feet to 4500 square feet. All residences qualify for three tax incentives upon purchase. First, the Neighborhood Enterprise Zone is a property tax abatement that drastically reduces a buyer
