Shreveport-Bossier City Photo of the Day

taken by my brother last week from the 20th floor of the Horseshoe casino hotel

Thanks for sharing, Richy. I hope he enjoyed his stay. I stayed on the 21st floor of that hotel once, but my view was of Bossier City. And while Bossier City is home to me and always has been, it's still not the view one would want. I am envious of that sweet Shreveport view. Too bad for gold-plated windows, however, as they give photos of the Shreveport skyline a sort-of smoggy look.

No prob Brian; always glad to contribute  Didn't get to talk to my brother for very long; it was a business trip with the state; but I know he was really impressed with the way SBC is developed along their riverfronts! Now if only BR would follow!

Here is another of his pics; not sure how many are post worthy?? Liked this shot with the high-rise casino hotels and new Convention Center hotel in the background

Looking at the 1st downtown pic above; I like the older linear buildings in front of the high-rise towers! Is that the Red River District?? That smoggy look is typical in BR; the dirty south; no gold-plated windows necessary

Actually yes and no. That stretch of buildings is actually Commerce Street, which the Red River District kind of spills out onto. It was originally intended to incorporate all that into the district. Unfortunately the district was a bit of a flop. But the true RRD is confined totally to the 'plaza' area underneath the Texas Street Bridge, and on the bottom floor of the Eldorado Casino parking deck.

I do like the way our riverfronts are developed to an extent, but there are some things I'd have done different and there are still some things yet to be done. But it was inevitable that the riverfront area would develop the way it has done, since the two cities are joined by the river, like Little Rock/North Little Rock.

Great shot! Such clarity! Very impressive mural!

BTW Brian..what's that small dome of on the bottom??

Thanks. Sometimes I hate that I gave up photography, but as is the nature of my obsessions, they wax and wane.

That dome you asked me about is the IMAX theater at Sci-Port. :) It's a domed IMAX which is unusual because it's more like an OmniMax, but it's actually an IMAX.

Hi. I have been researching the Bossier City Tornado of Dec.3,1978 and I cant find this book anywhere! Also, it will not let us view your pics? Would you mind getting in touch with me and maybe we could email back and forth. If you dont mind that is. I also grew up in meadowview/swan lake. I was 1 at the time of the tornado. I am sure we crossed paths a time or two as everybody in the "hood" knew one another :) Thanks so much for sharing this! I have searched and not had much luck at all. Thanks again!

Mandib - I see you posted this tornado question months ago, and I apologize but I haven't been around here much over the past few years as opposed to the first 3 or so years I was here! I do have this book in my possession, somewhere inside my house. For the longest time I kept it on my coffee table as a conversation piece. I purchased it off an old friend, a carpenter who did work for the home building company I used to work for. I was shocked that he would sell it to me, because I wouldn't sell it for anything in the world. It's far too sentimental to me. But since it does appear that there are no other copies in existence, as far as I've seen, I would be willing to make color copies of the entire book (it's a thin paperback, not a lot of pages) and email it to you. You could then take it somewhere like Walgreen's and print it on a good photo paper stock and then comb bind it or put it in a binder. I'm more than willing to help you out, especially as a fellow old-schooler from the SL. ;)

This photo was taken a week or so ago... Margaritaville (or as I like to call it PARTY CENTRAL) continues to rise next to the Bass Pro Shop. They are working on the 4th floor now, so they have 14 more floors to go. This will be the 5th or 6th tallest building in Shreveport-Bossier combined, but the 2nd tallest in Bossier City.

Thanks for the updated pic Brian! SBC Riverfront is going to get another impressive high-rise tower! And right next to Bass Pro too!

How has the Louisiana Boardwalk area been doing lately??

I honestly haven't heard lately, but the Boardwalk filed for bankruptcy some time back due to unpaid debt. Hopefully things are turning around now that they have a Courtyard by Marriott actually inside the Boardwalk. And you would think the Horseshoe would help it, but with the railroad tracks cutting through there most people opt not to make the walk between the two properties. Margaritaville should be awesome for the Boardwalk, because they're tying it in to the Boardwalk at the Bass Pro Shop. And the city of Bossier is getting ready to start re-doing the main road through the Boardwalk to add a roundabout, and they are going to create Margaritaville Way, a new street feeding directly into the Margaritaville property (Margaritaville's official address is 777 Margaritavile Way). I'm ready for the grand opening in 1 year because Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers will be there to perform.

Back on the subject of the Boardwalk, I emailed Toby Keth's management about building a restaurant here in the Boardwalk. There is a building down there that would be perfect for them, but I never received a response. Back in 2009 Toby Keith told CMT News that he was going to build one of his restaurants at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City because he has some of his horses stabled there, but that never ended up happening. If you've ever eaten at the original Toby Keith's in OKC's Bricktown District, you'd want one in your city as well. The first time I ate there, my waitress told me and my group that Toby came in one day with David Lee Roth unexpectedly and everyone went nuts. But anyway, if Toby Keith doesn't put his restaurant in that building it would make the perfect Dave & Buster's.

Also, we have 3 PGA golf pros from this area, and one of them, David Toms, is planning to build the David Toms Golf Academy right next to Margaritaville. So that will also put a golf facility down there as well, which will be another draw.

Nice panorama Brian! :shades: Great location next to Bass Pro! Hotel towers on each side of the bridge is going to look nice! Suprising that there is not a pedestrian overpass over the R.R. tracks connecting the Horseshoe & La.Boardwalk.....

BTW-How did you like the Bricktown District in OKC??

I've long thought they needed a better way for pedestrians to get from the Horseshoe to the Boardwalk, so I agree. I think there is a sidewalk on Traffic street that links the two properties, but a direct link would cut the walk at least in half.

I love Bricktown, it's really nice. Sonic Drive-Thru has its headquarters across the canal from Toby Keith's Bar & Grill, and there are tons of restaurants along the canal, plus a ballpark, the Chesapeake Energy (my employer) Arena. It reminds me a lot of San Antonio's Riverwalk, only newer.

I put this together in Photoshop. I took two similar views of Shreveport, one very old and one very recent, and put them together in Photoshop to show how much the riverfront area has changed over the years. If I were to guess, I would say that the photo on the left is from the 20s or 30s and the photo on the right is from 2010 or 2011.
