Dated picture of Shreveport VA Medical Center

Pardon me, folks. I've mentioned before that my computer at home sucks... my graphics card is crappy as all hell. So I can't read the text at the bottom of this picture and barely could make out that the top says "U.S. Veterans Hospital." Now watch someone tell me if really says, "If you can't read this you have a crappy computer!" Seriously, though, since I can't read the bottom I don't know the age of this picture but I do know it appears to be a drawing. Again, my graphics card is so bad that this could be a real photo. But anyway, the old downtown skyline is in the foreground and the VA Hospital is in the background.

^I've seen that picture on the internet, and I'm pretty sure it's a drawing based off of a postcard. I've got a pretty good graphics card on my PC, and I couldn't find what looked like a date. The bottom right of the picture just says "Printed by the _____" And the bottom left didn't look to have a date either, though I could be wrong.

Very nice picture nonetheless!

Yep, definitely a drawing as I can actually see it today on my work computer. But I still can't read the text!

When was the Veterans Hospital built? That will tell you a time frame for the picture. The bottom left says: "Aerial ... ... Section Looking Towards The New U.S. Veterans Hospital, Shreveport, La."

No, da man is Firefox with a zoom extension add on. Up to 400% but most pics do well at 150%.

Man, that's awesome. I've never used Firefox. Can't download it at the office and don't want to download it at home because my computer sucks so bad. When I get a new one I'd love to try it. I've been thinking about it for a while.

I never use IE. If I use something besides Firefox I use Opera. If you don't want to download Firefox you can order a CD for $5. Tabs are great.

I love Firefox. I downloaded it about 6 months ago, and haven't used IE since. It's simply better, safer, faster, and easier to use than IE. And yea, I love having tabs too.

I've been using Firefox for over three years and Opera before that and they both do a great job.

Is this a small manmade lake/pond for this subdivision? I see your point about the houses being close together. But I think this has been a trend growing in other larger cities. Guess it's making it to your direction now.

Yes, that's a manmade pond. It's just a long, narrow strip of water with trees and fountains, and is lined with houses on both sides. It's built just inside the Red River levee, behind the LSU-Shreveport campus.

Anyway, I'm familiar with houses being built so close together, but it's usually somewhat smaller homes. These just seem way too large to be that close. The other homes in that subdivision are all close together as well, but they're all somehwat smaller than these. Typically people in a house that size built on a huge estate lot. And I'm really not that kind of guy, to be honest, I like having my neighbors close by. I loved living in an apartment environment and I love the fact that my next-door neighbors are only 10 feet away from me, even if I don't like them (at least the ones on the east side of me!!) :D

Here's another example of houses that are REALLY close together, but again these are somewhat smaller... although they are roughly $350,000 homes. This was taken in Oak Alley in suburban north Bossier City. You can see from the sign in this photo, the layout of the homes. They're literally crammed together, and I would guess that every 2 houses probably even share a common courtyard. This is a growing trend in this area now, as more and more subdivisions are being built to resemble New Orleans courtyard communities. The architecture, names, and layouts are designed to give the subdivisions a New Orleans flavor.

Nice pics Brian. Shreveport is on the move. Is the Inner-Loop Exwy. extension going across the Red River to Airline Drive ?

It seems like the growing national trend for all those nice houses to be be wedged-between with tiny yards. I guess land is just to expensive these days, and developers get more bang for their $buck ?

Just got back from a long weekend in Shreveport.

I loved walking aroung downtown, such a nice mixture of historic and modern structures.

The Riverfront is great! The casinos are first class. BTRs casinos leave a lot to be desired.

Baton Rouge should look to Shreveport for ideas.

Here is an interesting shot down Texas Avenue towards the First United Methodist (?) church. Nice focal point.

I don't really know the layout for Shreveport but what part of the city is this at?

Hey, Rod, thanks for asking. This is actually in the southeastern area of the city, about 1/2 mile from my old apartment. I'm attaching a metro map, and I've highlighted and circled the area of the freeway extension.

Thanks, Richy.

No, the Inner Loop is being extended from the Industrial Loop Expressway to Flournoy-Lucas Road, just over 1 mile away. It's not exactly the extension I wanted, but I'll take whatever I can get. At least this will take a lot of the industrial traffic for the Port off the heavily-traveled Industrial Loop and Youree Drive. As soon as they finish this extension, the state is supposed to begin the next extension, which will take it all the way TO the Port.

Airline Drive doesn't go anywhere near where the extension will be going. The existing Inner Loop already crosses Airline Drive and Benton Road on the north side of the city.

Very nice shot. I love the view down Texas Avenue, looking toward the church. And yes, you got the name right. I also like the opposite view, looking down Texas Avenue, FROM that church, looking toward the Texas Street Bridge.

Sounds like you really enjoyed yourself, and I appreciate the kind words about my home city. I also hope you had an opportunity to cross the river and check out the Boardwalk.

I do not gamble at any of the casinos. But if looking at the impressive, glitzy high-rise hotels at the Shreveport/ Bossier City Casino's are any indication? Compared to Baton Rouge's sorry excuse for a casino hotel, it's not even close. I am sure Fla.Tiger is exactly right, BR could learn some things from SBC. One big advantage that SBC and Lake Charles also have is the proximity to get a large draw from "Big-Texas". BR is going to be more local. Also many Baton Rougean's like to go to the Miss. Gulf Coast Casino's too.

Nice pic down Texas Street.
