These are the best shots I was able to get of the new Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission. I was also in a hurry to get out of there. I'm sure the security guard was wondering why I was taking photos, but oh well. And what a shame a construction site has to have a security guard, but a while back the project suffered a major setback after vandals came in one night and trashed the place as it was being constructed. So sad. :(

Anyway, here are the photos:

Thanks for sharing those pics. I really like the look of that area around yall's nice riverfront area. That conservatory is nice too.

Good will triumph over evil in the end. Sad to see the setback; but a very positive will still happen.

Thanks, man. That conservatory is going to be reconstructed from the ground up, starting in 2 months. I'm not sure how long construction is expected to last, but the entire project of reconstructing the conservatory, renovating the art gallery, and enclosing the plaza with glass, is supposed to cost about $350,000.

And yes, the setback with the Rescue Mission was really bad, especially considering the cost of the damage. I'm just happy the builder was able to have his insurance cover the cost and they were able to press on. Our current Rescue Mission is overcrowded and in a really old, rundown building outside of downtown. This will put it IN downtown and will give them more room to spread out.

Downtown Shreveport as seen from "the other side of the tracks." In the somewhat foreground, on the left side, is the 'Once in a Millennium Moon' mural on the old AT&T building. The mural covers 2 or 3 sides of the building and is said to be the largest public mural in the nation.

Part of the Shreveport skyline can be seen in the background. :D

Was this building built for the Chamber or did it have another use?

This bldg the old library is one of the most beautiful bldg in the South and right in the middle of the the most cosmos area of the city. Would love a pic of this bldg surrounded by the huge skyscrapers. Would love pics of the highlands area to include Fairfield and the churches on the Kings Hwy and Line Ave and all the beautiful churches in the area

I took a few photos downtown on Friday evening. With some of the shots I took of the Shreveport riverfront and the help of Photomatix, I created the following surrealistic HDR image:

Also, here's a shot I got of the Horseshoe during the same outing:

And finally, a photo I took today at Chimp Haven. Nope, it's not of a chimp, but rather a water lily and a frog. :) The chimps were hiding today!!!

That's also a nice pic Brian. Love that 'starburst' look of the lights and that look on the water, very nice. :D

Brian I was curious would there be a way to move over to the left and try to get a shot of the mural with some of the skyline to the right of the pic without the powerline?

wheres the best place to host photos?

Wow, woob, I just don't know. Asking here you'll get multiple answers, because everyone has a different idea of what they're looking for. Personally I'm happy with Flickr, but I guess if you're settling for free, no place is really great. I like Flickr, Photobucket, and PictureTrail.

Well, yes there is, but I wasn't about to attempt it. I wasn't really looking for a great shot there, but just experimenting mostly. Some people are braver than I, but in that part of downtown (the bad side of the tracks - literally!) I only got out of my car for long enough to snap off about 5 or 6 shots, then I got back in and locked my doors. No kidding. As a matter of fact, the street I was one block over from the street where a city worker was shot in the head as he climbed out of a manhole while doing his job a few years back. That's one of those areas where muggings are routine, and I wasn't about to become a statistic!

Maybe one of these days when I have other people with me I'll venture over there and try it.

FYI: that mural is the other side of the mural I posted in another thread yesterday, from someone's Flickr photos!

Sci-Port to close...

temporarily. :)

The center will be closed through September 1, while the interior of the building receives a makeover, including the IMAX theater.

Great idea! They'll want the entire center to be nice and new for the upcoming opening of the Space Center!

Ah I see, can't blame you there.
