Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Here are some pics I took when I went down there to climb. The area is huge and loaded with recreation opportunities. The Refuge is only and hour and a half from OKC and is just outside of Lawton, so it adds a lot to the quality of life for residents of these cities.

The Wichita Mountains are a mecca for rock climbers who come from New Mexico, Arkansas, Kansas, and as far as Houston to climb there. These pictures were taken in an area called The Narrows.

Is it true that a wild herd of Longhorn cattle lives in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge?

Yes. The refuge is also home to a large herd of bison (buffalo). In the late 1800's the buffalo were nearly extinct. Teddy Roosevelt took all the remaining animals and put half of them at Yellowstone and half of them at the Wichita Mountains.

Those are cool pics.

I've lurked for awhile, but just joined today. This thread spurred me to actually register. I've been to the Wichita Mountains several times and have created a page with some of my better photos.

The web address is:

Oklahoma is a beautiful state and these photos prove it. At the top of the page I linked, there is another page you can click on called "Ouachita Mountains" which is the forested mountains of Southeastern Oklahoma. Thyis is another gorgeous area of the state.

One other thing. If you click on "start slideshow," it brings up a really nifty presentation window for you to be able to see all the pics
