Motorcycle rally coming to downtown Baton Rouge

The first-ever Red Stick Rally will be held downtown Oct. 28-30. Jack Kellerman, coordinator of the motorcycle event, says he expects 10,000 people will attend the rally. Kellerman says already 100 people have signed up online but that bikers traditionally register for rallies once they arrive. Kellerman's brother, Brett, one of the organizers, has been involved in Las Vegas Bike Week for a number of years. "There are a couple of rallies in Texas that bring in over 100,000 people," Jack Kellerman says. "We're looking at this being a long-term event to attract people from all over the U.S." The Red Stick Rally has already garnered support from several well-known local sponsors, such as Baton Rouge Harley-Davidson, BMW Motorcycles of Baton Rouge, WAFB and Hollywood Casino. Plans are to have live music, a strongman competition and a Halloween costume contest. Front Street from the River Center to Florida Boulevard will be blocked off for the event. "People will be able to walk right from the rally to the downtown bars and restaurants," Kellerman says.

300seats announces 'pop-up restaurant' events

300seats is bringing the "pop-up restaurant" concept to Baton Rouge, with the first events scheduled for this weekend. Bringing together teams of chefs, entertainers and artists, the idea is to transform an out-of-use space in the Perkins Rowe courtyard into an innovative restaurant experience, says 300seats founder Manny Valencia. "The pop-up restaurant movement is happening all around the world, in cities like London, Madrid, New York and now Baton Rouge," Valencia says. "Each of the seatings will be a unique experience, as we look to intersect cuisine, art and culture." Three pop-up restaurant events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Tickets and more information are available here

'Appetite for Life' to film in downtown B.R.

MSN's Appetite for Life with Andrew Zimmern will be in downtown Baton Rouge on Wednesday, Jan. 25, to film show segments in front of a live audience. Visit Baton Rouge spokeswoman Theresa Overby says the show's crew will be in town next week to narrow down the exact filming location. Included on the short list of possible sites is the recently completed North Boulevard Town Square and the lawn of the Louisiana State Museum, which affords a background shot of the State Capitol. "It's going to be a two-hour window that they'll be filming, and we're hoping to have a big crowd on hand," Overby says, adding that the show's producers describe Zimmern as "typically very gracious with crowds and people who come out, so it should be a lot of fun." Overby says Visit Baton Rouge is also hoping to incorporate the city's food trucks in the filming and have them on-site to attract a larger-than-usual lunch crowd. "They're even talking about doing some kind of food truck challenge as part of it," she says. "We've put it out on Twitter, and people seem really excited about it." A jambalaya cook-off is also planned, Overby says, with proceeds benefiting the Capital Area United Way. Full details on filming locations, associated events and airtimes will be released in the coming weeks. You can keep up to date with the latest by following the Visit Baton Rouge Twitter feed here, and learn more about Appetite for Life at the show's website here.

U.S. Bowling Congress ready to roll into B.R.

The United States Bowling Congress unveiled its finished bowling lanes at the Baton Rouge River Center today, which officials hope will bring an economic gold mine to the city over the next six months. "Forget Indianapolis; the real Super Bowl is in Louisiana in 10 days," says Paul Arrigo, president of the Baton Rouge Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. The USBC Open opens Feb. 11 and will run through July 10. Just as during the tournament's previous stay in Baton Rouge in 2005, the Baton Rouge River Center has been outfitted with 48 lanes, with additional training lanes upstairs. Upgrades for 2012 include a mural featuring blue-tinted photographs of Baton Rouge landmarks, as well as a wall-to-wall LED screen that will display scores, videos and advertising. Banners proclaiming records and notable achievements hang above the lanes. The River Center has seating for up to 600 spectators. Admission to the bowling events is free. "This is a tremendous look," tournament manager Duane Hagen says. "The bowlers will be truly impressed. I've never seen anything like this." Brian Lewis, managing director of tournaments for USBC, expects 60,000 bowlers and a total of 90,000 visitors during the championship, and estimates a total economic impact of between $85 million and $95 million.
