Pilots will kill the deal probably.

Pilots from both airlines are represented by the same union (ALPA); AJC had reported earlier that union reps from both sides were in negotiations primarily over the issue of merging the seniority lists. Althought DL has more pilots, due to previous buyouts, they have some relatively less senior pilots flying 777s who don't want to get bumped out of their seats by more senior NW pilots.

I'm sure everyone has heard that the Delta-Northwest merger is back on the table. As predicted the pilots union still haven't agreed on a deal to merge the seniority lists but the merger is proceeding without that precondition. The AJC is reporting that a deal could be announced as soon as tommorrow.

Its official now!!! The largest airline in the world here in Atlanta...who would have ever thought?

They are using these hub statistics to sell the merger, showing how little overlap there is in the two systems. Some people believe the Detroit/Cincinnati and Atlanta/Memphis hubs will be redundant in the combined airline.

Peak day departures

Atlanta 993 14

Cincinnati 383 11

Detroit 19 520

Memphis 14 233

NY-JFK 198 6

Salt Lake City 336 5

The new Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal appears to be in danger of substantial delays - a casualty of the current financial market economics that have made borrowing very difficult. According to an AJC article the airport has been unable to sell $600M in bonds needed to move forward despite an A+ debt rating.

That would suck, especially for Delta as they continue their international expansion. Recently announced routes from Atlanta include exotic destinations such as Monrovia-Liberia, Kuwait City-Kuwait, Cape Town-South Africa, and Nairobi-Kenya.

I always feel like this is such a misleading number because Atlanta only has one airport - of course it's going to be busy. Does anyone have numbers for "Total passengers served" per city? I mean take Chicago's or Dallas' or New York's main airports and add up the flights and what do those numbers look like?

As for total passengers O'Hare had just over 74.9M passengers served (2007 Stats), while Hartsfield clocked in over 92.6M. Midway served around 18M passengers in 2007. You would have to add both passenger counts of both O'Hare and Midway to get the numbers that Hartsfield serves as a single entity.

As for NYC, ALL airports in their metro including JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, served 107M in total (07' stats). So it would take all of the aiports in NYC to get close to the same number that Hartsfield does in one year. (and remember that is Three MAJOR airports vs. One)

Dallas is not even close, with only 56M Passengers served.

As for additional airports in the city of ATL, there are many.

Dekalb-Peachtree Airport is the 2nd busiest in the state of GA (including Macon, Savannah, and Columbus). That is VERY impressive when you consider the scope and size of the world's busiest airport is right down the street. ;)

Outside of Hartsfield and Dekalb Peachtree, there are many other smaller ones. These are some that I know of, partly because my Dad used to be a pilot. (I might be missing one or two other private ones, so please anyone that knows please feel free to edit my list):

Dobbins Air Reserve Base (Atlanta Naval Air Station) (KMGE)***

Fulton County Airport at Charlie Brown Field (KFTY)

McCollum Field (KRYY)

Briscoe Field (KLZU)

Cartersville Airport (KVPC)

Mathis Airport (GA27)

Great post A2. I hear that arguement all the time when Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is designated as the world's busiest. I am so glad that you took the time to add the numbers up...because when you do, you see that the whole arguement about "well thats just one airport, what about all the airports in metro NYC" just doesn't fly...excuse the pun. Even more amazing is the fact that in sheer size, I would imagine that ATL is not even in the top four largest in terms of size. To handle such volume in such a limited space is a testament to efficiency.
