Nomination for World Heritage Gets a Boost from Park Service (4/14/07 NDN)

The Newport World Heritage Committee received notification this week that both the city's nominations will be considered for inclusion on a tentative list the National Park Service is preparing.

The Park Service's Office of International Affairs would select 10 sites for inclusion on the tentative list, from 36 nominations submitted from around the country. The selected sites will be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Center by Feb. 1, 2008.

The United Nations World Heritage Committee, which now has representatives from 21 nations, makes the final decision on whether a site is put on the World Heritage List. Countries make no more than one nomination a year, and countries wait a year after drawing up their tentative list before submitting a nomination. So, the first U.S. nomination could be made after Feb. 1, 2009, and would not be considered by the World Heritage Committee until the following year.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites first reviews the nomination and makes a recommendation to the World Heritage Committee before the committee makes its decision. Roos said the U.S. could make one nomination a year from its tentative list for 10 straight years, so this could be a long process for Newport, assuming it is included on that tentative list.

Among the US locations we are competing against in this very first round are: Mount Vernon, civil rights sites in Alabama, the buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright in Arizona, California, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (forming one nomination), the Shaker Villages in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Kentucky (forming one nomination), the Chimney Rock Archeological Area in Colorado and the Papahanaumokuakea National Monument in Hawaii.
