Baton Rouge Photo of the Day

Thanks Byrde. That's the request I had been waiting for ! Very nice pic. That pic taken is about six miles from downtown. This was a topic of conversation on another thread, that downtown BR had 4 high-rise bldgs. easily visible from that distance. And with the projects set to begin construction soon, that number of high-rises will nearly double to 7 high-rises easily visible ! I can't wait. The Govenmental Bldg. is off the pic. to the left, and the State Bldgs(tallest 13-stories). are barely above the tree-line are not counted.

I like the Marriott pic too ! That would look nice on the Riverfront near the Casinos. But not every high-rise has to be in the CBD I guess ?

When I took the pic I couldn't remember which PC I copied it too. I was pulling some pics from my camera to my laptop and WOW!!!, there's the picture you requested.

With the few high rise building we have in town, I'd love to see every building 10 floors and more in the CBD.

Fantastic pictures, bryde! Wow!

I really like how the I-10 bride just looks to be floating in the air above the trees, very cool. And I also like how the Marriot Hotel just seems to pop up out of nowhere in all of the trees. The downtown pic is very cool too. I like how the Capitol just seems to rule over everything from that angle.

^... they after this they definately won't need one, for a long long time!

If anything, they should have built a movie theatre in north baton rouge... they are all citiplace and south

Baton Rouge will have its fair share of theaters, but Citiplace will still be overcrowded! It just draws from a much bigger demographic than the other theaters. For those living on campus and the surrounding areas (southdowns, garden district, etc), as well as for those in the heavily populated areas north of downtown (Plank Road area), Citiplace is by far the most convenient theater. I've learned to avoid Citiplace on the weekends because the congestion is a real pain.

While all the new theaters out east (Rave, Tinsletown, etc) are nice, I think we need a theater between LSU and downtown, if not just downtown. I heard there used to be one near Mckinley High School, but that it closed down as the neighborhood went into decline. A theater in this area would be a welcomed addition, not to mention it would relieve some of the overcrowding at Citiplace. This is just my opinion, but a theater placed strategically close to LSU would do AWESOME business, if anything, b/c it would give those who'd otherwise have to deal with College Ave traffic another option.

bluff , You are exactly right about the cinema's in Baton Rouge. It is plenty lop-sided to the southeast; and east. With two additional cinemas set to open in the Bluebonnet corridor(Rave) & Cinemark(Perkins Rowe); I would expect Tinseltown at Seigen Village to struggle, and possibly close one day.

I think the perfect location for a NEW cinema would be on the southern-edge of downtown near the Mississippi River Bridge. It could be part of the Riverfront Masterplan to utilize the Old Municipal Dock as part of a *entertainment complex* next to the proposed minor-league baseball stadium. Along with the new cinema, I think a small bowling alley should join the mix, along with restaurants. Giving LSU and downtown easy access to some untapped potential in that area. A Red Stick Observation Tower could go up there too ! A 330 ft. lighted beacon to the entertainment complex.

Thanks so much for the compliment Brian. That means alot coming from you guys, because yall have really been doing so well posting pics/development info/Lagnaippe, etc. representing your areas and our State too. Yall's post have been impressive and entertaining. It has been a great ride so far in "five" months already. Look forward to many more !

The Old State Capitol looks so much better than it used to, when it was a bland/pale/dull white. It's got more character now.

It's very nice, for sure, and that photo does it a LOT of good as well! :)

Just out of curiosity, are you using a tripod? That photo is so perfectly straight, I never could get anything like that without support for my camera.

The newly renovated Old State Capital and Governmental Building is to the right.

Wow, thats a beautiful building! Great shot Richyb83  Thanks for telling me about this ;) Im really fascinated by this style of architecture. Surely a design you dont see much of anymore. Almost looks like it could be a mix of Spanish/Mediterranean. What style is it exactly?

Thanks TUrban. My crash research says the style of architecture is Castellated Gothic. (Gothic Revival) But you are right, it sure looks like it has some Spanish influence as well. It was opened in 1850. It served as the capitol from 1850-1861, then 1882 to 1932. It was nearly demolished a few times.

Yeah me too ! It made no sense, I am glad they realized that would have been a serious mistake. Actually Huey Long wanted to tear it down too back in the 1930's when he decided a new progressive skyscraper capitol should replace it. But some women stood in front of the Old Capitol in protest. So Huey just decided on another location.

Yeah, most city "officials" aren't very well when the "parking lot!" lightbulb goes off in their heads. Dingbats.

Thanks to Gov. Long for having the foresight to at least build something decent on the sight, though I'm gladthe old building was spared and the new building was constructed elsewhere.

What would Baton Rouge be without that awesome State Capitol building? It just wouldn't be the same!!

Nice shots there, bryde!

I've never been to the planetarium, but it looks pretty cool. I'm gonna have to check it out one day.

Thanks to richyb for posting (in another forum) this website... LASM and Planetarium

Another reason to get downtown! The website (posted above) shows that The Wall is playing this month at the Planetarium--every Sat. at 7pm. Not trying to impose on anyone, but for PF fans, this is a must see! Not too many cities out there are offering this experience. Laser-light shows can be boring, but rest assured, this one is not! Tonight's showing is the last for the month...I wish I was in town!
