This is not economically feasible, why on Earth would you build a new rail line that only goes, what, a mile at most? On top of that, the state can't afford it, period. There are literally thousands of better ways to improve our transportation network, both mass transit and roads.

Because:

1) It seems odd for the Union Square branch to end at Union Square. One of the bigger shortcomings with the system is that it operates around a single hub. It would be wonderful to have a Red/Green (and commuter rail) connection so far outside downtown. It would support much needed development in the Porter Square area too.

2) The Green Line could extend beyond Porter. It could continue along the Fitchburg commuter rail right of way, which includes Alewife, Belmont Center, Waverly Square and Brandeis. Or it could join a widened Minuteman bike trail right of way. This goes through Arlington Center, Arlington Heights and Lexington Center. Or even better, it could branch both ways.
