PROPOSED: WATERFRONT PARK

Recommended Posts

I wish they were showing this Downtown, you know, near where the park is supposed to go. The city seems to have this bug in their bonnet about having events at the Casino as to make them 'accessible' to everyone. Most of the city is two bus lines from Roger Williams Park, the park is anything but accessible to most non-car driving city people. Display it at the Casino if you must, but also display it Downcity. Everyone is one bus ride from Kennedy Plaza.

It's going to take me an hour to get out there and back to see this.

Correction, an hour and a half if I spend only 15 minutes looking at it. If I spend more than 15 minutes, then it's closer to two hours, and that doesn't include my walk to/from Kennedy Plaza or Empire or Broad Street to catch the bus.

The kids at New Urban Arts submitted a park design: .jpg .pdf

I LOVE the proposal for a Rhode Island Red chicken statue!

i like their proposal. it seems to be something for everyone... which is what providence needs in a downtown-ish big park like this.

I think a dog park is a must -

that's definitely true. are dogs allowed in other parks or is it frowned upon (or simply against policies)? a dog park would allow animal lovers, and animals, to mingle freely without worrying about other people.

by ordinance dogs on or off leash are not allowed in city parks. However, the city is working very hard to figure out a way to have dog run areas within certain parks because clearly people want them. while i like the idea of parks within the parks, i think they really screw with the design of some of the old parks. I'd rather people be able to walk their dog ON LEASHES in any city park they want, and then have a few places for off leash. But it really annoys me when people walk their dogs off leash in parks where kids and other people are, because some folks are afraid of dogs, some folks have dogs that are aggressive when off leash dogs are around. I say keep everyone on a leash (even children if necessary) and we should all be fine.

I'm generally fine around dogs, but I agree, in public, they need to be leashed. Any dog owner caught saying "don't worry, he's friendly" should be fined and jailed for a week. I don't care if you damn dog is friendly, I don't want it slobbering all over me and humping my leg. <_<

Looks like the park finalists are up on the cities website!

http://www.providenceri.com/government/waterfront/

1st one is a traditional park, like what we expected to see

The 2nd one is a SHARP difference and seems to be extremely modern and artsy. There doesnt seem to be enough detail for me to really get an accurate portayal of how it will look. It seems very modern and artsy and will take alot of work if they want to do it right, this design would be something that you cant half-ass. Its sorta reminds me of Millenium park in Chicago possibly....

parks can't take long to be built... when everything is finalized and the land is free.. how long do we think this will take to be completed??

Its mostly earthwork and alot of finishing details (bricks and trim etc...) my guess would be about a year for the whole thing, maybe the bridge might take a little longer.

Also seems like the 2nd concept would take a little longer than the first, i wish tere was more detail on concept # 2.

1st one appears easy to build but would be extreme boredom for the city. 2nd one can't be that complex- clearly its the work of a big firm with the ability to produce.
